Has anyone used this archiver to compress or decompress an archive?

Can you tell me how to speed it up?

I have got an archive with the extension *.kgb taht requires this software for extraction. This 608kb archive contains a folder of files of a total size of 557.8mb.

The problem is: The extraction time is beyond 14 hours.

My friend began extracting it at around 5:30 P.M. and as far as I know he is still extracting it. (I am not joking he really is.)
 
Yeah KGB extraction takes a lot of time depending on the way it was first compressed .You are better of extracting it on a high end machine ( maybe something like Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz with 2gb of ram ) .. :)

:rofl: Wow! People will have to upgrade their computers just to use this software for extraction or compression.

Time to uninstall.
 
^^lol....yea..kgb archiever needs lotta horsepower...more ram u got faster d execution n better d compression...

Let me think with 1 gb ram I need more than 14hrs to extract an archive. So if I want to complete the entire thing in about 5-10mins how much ram will I need?

Yup, I sure am glad to have uninstalled it else I might have really landed up looking like my current avatar (stubbs).

Dunno about the possiblity. I only tried to extract it once saw 14 hours and quit. My friend told me that he got the entire game in 608kb so I thought I'll give it a try myself and see if it really is true.

yeah it is possible even i have the same file of nfs carbom 1mb ..uncompressing into the full game dvd...

and it does work :hap2:
 
This was put up on TE sometime ago I think. Amazing little thing this KGB compression algorithm is.

RAM won't speed up the decompression. More than 2GB might not help very much. It needs more processing horsepower. A quad core system would be a must. Has anyone actually tried decompressing such a file on a quaddy with 2GB RAM :cowboy: ?

compression alogorithm is an ideal one if it takes less time and decent compression ratio is obtained.

A s.w which achieves Compression to a higher degree by sacrificing time as a factor is not considered ideal..

that is why KGB has got a very limited user base ..

So if u got time and the h/w .. u can use it .
 
but it ll b great for saving space i guess :ohyeah: esp for those of us with smaller hdds runnin out of space. me off to check it out :D

I agree. A person with a slow internet might think of the file size as great to download or someone with a floppy can carry games of around 1 gb in compressed file sizes of a few 100 kbs.

But who uses a floppy these days and the internet speed is such that someone with a good internet connection and less amount of ram can download the 1 gb file in a lesser time.

The extraction time was beyond 14 hours in my case but at 30 kbps I can download it in less than 5 hours put it on a pen drive and pass it around to a large no. of people and in the mean time play it myself.

If you ask me, anyone who can afford to use this s/w decently can definitely afford a pendrive, a decent internet connection and definitely a larger hdd.

I would rather use 76% to 95% compression of winrar than use 0.1% of KGB.

As far as I've seen over the years, the compression results have been more or less same for all formats .zip, .rar .arj .lzh. give or take a few KB.

Time has been an issue though and WinRAR has been one s/w that has impressed me here. The .rar format seems to be efficient in this dept.

KGB being rather new is probably the reason for low adoption. Anyway an extreme compression ratio will take time with all softwares. I don't think there's any s/w that can give this level of compression without adequate processing.

It doesnt Uncompress to a full game image!!!!
Dude!!! Its called a mini image!!!
Its just like a shadow copy, It doesnt hav the full dvd jus pretends that it has..THese are *.mds files...They are used to fool securedisk and other protection methods...
Use daemon and load it, then run something from it..Ul know what i mean..
There is a script which when run makes windows see it as a full image, and hence even explorer reports as 4gb(or whatever size of original disk)
If 4gb compressed to 1mb then people wouldnt be downloading 30gb high def movies!!!!
Huff..Dont just believe what your eyes see..reason it out...:P
@prabs:-what are the contents of the archieve??
And kgb is the most worthless archiver out there, better than that is uharc compressor, its used to compress game rips..Me once got a hitman blood money rip of 200mb just outta curiosity, decompressed to 2.4 gb..lol
 
HEEEYYYY .. ANYONE KNOWS WHERE I CAN GET KGB FILES OF GAMES??

I NEED NFS MOST WANTED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAYBE 2-3 MB to DLOAD..

PLEASE !!!!!!!!
