Laptops Laptop Upgrade

Hi Guys ,

I have got this free Laptop from HCL ( got one free with some holiday package my parents bought :bleh: ) anyways , the problem is that its a budget laptop and hence the configuration ain't that great. Its got an intel daul core processor , 512 mb ram , 80 gb hdd and a dvd drive.

Now I would like to upgrade it so as to turn it into a decent lappy capable of some moderate gaming and some other entertainment stuff. So Kindly suggest me some upgrades under the budget of 7k.

I am thinking on the lines of a couple of gb ram , dvd writer , 160 gb hdd and a graphic card. I wanna play all the latest games atleast on medium settings or atleast wanna play all those good dx 9 games on medium. I Know 7k is not much , probably just the graphic card is gonna cost that much :( Anyways plz suggest , i'll see if i can stretch my budget.

Thanks :)

Well you can upgrade the RAM for 2K, a DVDRW for maybe another 3K.

But you can never upgrade the GFX on that laptop since it is onboard and not as a plugin. Its the same on all laptops. In fact very few laptops used to come with removable gfx, dunno if they exist now.

Only way to play games on a laptop is to get a new one. Sorry.

Great :( I thought i can always put an external gfx in my lappy :( And is dvd writer really that costly ? For desktops they are as cheap as 1k these days. Also i'll be upgrading my brand new dvd drive , therefore HCL should charge me only for the difference , right ?

Also is running a laptop 24-7 advisble ? I plan to get a broadband connection and hence will be downloading a lot.

And one more thing , i can't see any edit option in my post therefore i am forced to post a new reply.I think its a bug or something.

I am not sure about the current price, its generally higher for laptop drives.

As for HCL I think they would have done that only at the time of sale. But no harm in trying, so talk to them.

And no there is no problem in running it 24X7. Just make sure the airflow is not blocked by keeping it on a hard and flat surface (definitely not on a cloth surface). My laptop has almost always been ON since past couple of years.

EDIT - will see about your edit option problem later and let you know
