Sharp Announces 65-inch LCD Monitor

Sharp on Thursday announced what it claims is the world's largest professional LCD monitor, a 65-inch model that will be available this June.

Specs :

The new PN-655 LCD monitor, which features 1920 x 1080, two megapixel high-definition resolution.

Detailed specifications were not available, although the company said it would provide a range of connectors, including DVI inputs.

Pixel response time for the PN-655 is less than 6 ms. The viewing angle is greater than 170 degrees.

Features :

The company's Dual-Fine Engine technology was included, to help the diplay show off PC as well as video content.

The PN-655 also contains a four-wavelength spectrum, cold-cathode fluorescent backlight that provides an enhanced color spectrum including deeper, more vibrant and vivid reds," according to the company.

A technique called Bright Pixel Elimination culls "stuck-on" white pixels, to make a failed pixel "invisible to the viewer," Sharp said.

Epson develops OLED-based print head

Epson Corp. said it has developed a print head using an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) light source, which is touted as achieving printing performance comparable to that of laser printer heads.

Printers and copiers currently use an LED or laser light source, but that could be changing in the future.

Details of OLED :

Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. collaborated with Epson on the prototype printer head from the material side, supplying red polymer OLED material.

The red material is coated on a glass substrate, and it can be applied directly onto a glass substrate, making it possible for a single substrate to have a linear light source. This enables the exact amount of light to irradiate a spot with extreme accuracy to form highly uniform images, according to Epson.

Epson intends to merge its low-temperature polysilicon TFT technology with the OLED technology to build a one-body printer head module with OLED and IC integrated on it.

Future :

"The technology has large potential for compact printer heads," said an Epson spokesman.

The OLED material has reached usable levels in terms of lifetime, wavelength and brightness, the Epson spokesman said. Both companies will now focus on producing the head in volume.

Sumitomo Chemical is accelerating development of high-emission OLED materials.
