Ok, I might be buying an LCD monitor frm UK/UAE. Might.

I do not play games all that much, but I would like to be able to every once in a while.

What shud I look for in:

1. Resolution? (1024x768 is prob OK for me)

2. Contrast Ratio

3. Viewing angle

4. Size (I currently have a 17" flatron E700S - pathetic quality)

5. Response time

6. Brand - BenQ, Acer, LG, others?

7. Does DVI improve quality in any way? If so, then look for that too.

8. Intensity?

9. Anything else?

Budget 10-11k Rs but NO MORE. Not even 1 rupee (consider pre VAT prices for UK, cos it is refunded on export)

after using 17" crt a 15" lcd might be ok (about an inch smaller) but push for a 17 incher (the native screen res for a 17" is 1280*1024, so see if you're comfortable with working at that resolution)

hmm .. try to get a 8 bit panel if you can , but the response time for 8 bit panels is a bit on the high side

dvi highly recommended.

What about backlight etc? I have heard that the backlight on an LCD goes bust after two years and after that it is useless. Can a backlight be replaced easily by a technician?
And bottle, since u have an LCD monitor (I think) can u tell me which models I should look at?
What is all this 8 bit stuff?
I know nothing of LCDs.

D-Sub = VGA. If thats the only input available, avoid the monitor like plague :P. Make sure it has a DVI. Makes a world of difference to sharpness of text. Also make sure your panel is PVA/MVA and not the 6bit TN panel. TN panels have nice response times but suck in color reproduction.

dell, you need to hunt around for their rebates.. prices vary from country to country . eg, a friend of mine got a 24" (widescreen i think) for $1500 sing which comes to 39k rs.

samsung 153p that belongs to my gf has dvi ;)

17" inch LG, Viewsonic, Samsung models are good. my personal choice being LG overall.
if you are going to do Gaming and watch DVD movies on it, go for 12ms ~ 8 ms models.
Re: dvi and d-sub inputs

Dvi is better and preferred input, but dvi models will cost about $40 ~ 50 more than equivalent or same D-sub models.

Hence i doubt you will be able to get 17 inch DVI models within ur stated 11K INR budget. if you can be a "Little" more "liberal" or "flexible" with your budget then perhaps .......
Also if you are personally going to UK then it would be better if you check for any "Dead Pixels" on the LCD.
apparently all the co's have a policy of "allowing" upto 8 dead pixels without the user claiming replacement / warranty.

so whoever is purchasing it from a shop in UK just ask him /her to check for "dead pixels".
edit: try to avoid 15 inch models.

Well I found this great Acer model but it is 2k too expensive.
however since my guy is coming in early oct, in the one month that is left maybe prices will go down.
(Just for info the model is AL1751As....drooolll)
