Lenshood and UV filter for my new canon 550d

hi guys, i just bought a canon 550d, just wanted to know about the lens hood and an UV filter, why are these used? does using these having a big change in the quality of the pics captured?
 
Hi Anish, the UV filter is there just for protection. Cheap UV filters can actually degrade IQ whille good quality ones will cause negligible IQ degredation. Do note that any scratches on these filters will cause additional IQ loss as they lead to flare and reduced contrast.

The hood on the other hand helps improve IQ in certain situations by reducing flare and aiding contrast. If you drop your lens the good provides far greater protection than a UV filter and its a must have.
