There are been people "innocently" increasing their post count by making double/triple/quadriple posts at the same time. The edit button was made for a reason unfortunatly you cant make horse out of donkeys, can you? Any posts made within a day's time should be auto merged.
 
A day's time may be too long, and may hamper the reading of the thread. As it is a lot of members don't bother to read an entire thread before posting. I am also partly guilty of this in the sense that I scan the start of each post to see if ive read it before. Automerge on a 24 hour basis, would make me and others miss potentially important info if they are in an older post. I'd say a maximum of 30 minutes, preferably 15.

But i'd still prefer that people use the edit button.
 
I remember having this feature on TE about 3.5 years ago :P it was nice to post replies on thread instead of editing :P unno why it was removed
 
But then the highly voiced threads would become very messy...

Only thing that should be done is merge 2 consecutive posts by the same user .. things like bump on unattractive deals... otherwise i don't wana see a reply to a post 2 posts above it or the other way around...
 
+1 to this. automerging consecutive posts by the same user (and keeping post count unincremented) if within some reasonable (say 1 hr? 12hrs?) time limit is very handy.
 
I'm in favour of automerging consecutive posts as suggested by the OP and others above. Probably with a time limit of an hour or so..
 
automerge is great .. but don't make it for more than 1 hour/2 hour. There are times when people want to actually secure next post slot for later update too ... ( while giving loooong reviews maybe ;) .

first show us a forum that has the said feature ...then we may consider it ...24 hrs too much :bleh:

We had this feature on TE before. That time the limit was somewhere around 30 mins IIRC.

We need to get this back.
 
Yes we had it, and the reason it was removed was that it was resource heavy.

Now that we have editing, take a bit of extra trouble to edit your post.

Jokes apart,

There are lots of newbies literally thrashing forums like a flea market. Most of them dont seem to understand what exactly an edit button means. This is not a fresh idea so many old members know about it. Mods know how this forums way more than me so the end decision is theirs.
 
oh, i didnt realize "we" were in a position to make decisions like that. Last time i checked, "the community" didnt take things under consideration, "we" made requests. Maybe "we" should deal with our entitlement issues.

i think you are ignoring the importance of "we" i.e. "the community", if the majority of "we" dont support soccer's request then there is very slim chance of it being implemented (some exceptions apart), and if "you" have allergies from me using the "we" word then i can change it to "admins/mods" , just for your internal satisfaction (read ego) ;)

I didnt see your admin/mod tag, my bad.;) And yes, please do replace the said word, it will definitely help my case of chronic mispokenitis and presumptuophobia.
