Lines on Kindle Screen-Warranty Claim

To my horror, when I took out my Kindle from bag today, there were lot of black lines on the screen. Except for a very small area, nothing is visible. I initially thought it was because of the rain yesterday, but an Internet search suggests a broken screen. No cracks seem to be visible from outside. Since I am at office, I cannot check it thoroughly. I will post a photo once I reach home.

I bought this through a friend in US. He had it shipped it to his local US address and handed over to me once he returned to India. It's been max 6 months since it has been bought. So I believe it's under warranty. Has anybody got a replacement or claimed warranty for Kindle from India? Also, anybody faced this type of issues?

Broken screen (glass substrate) is my number one complaint against current ebook devices. I had similar issues (though with different device). Amazon used to give free replacement during first gen kindle. I heard currently they are charging for broken screen. You can find out more in amazon forums.

And reg. shipping, I doubt whether they will ship it for India(because this is bought in US). Infact, if you want to ship the damaged device outside India, many couriers(I tried Fedex, DHL) will ask for original receipt, so that they don't face any issues in customs.

oho, you broke the screen. I did too in January on my kindle 3. I sent it back to my friend in US and Amazon replaced it free of charge. I was lucky that another friend was going to the US though. Amazon is best at customer service. You should try sending it back.... All the best dude... :(

I got a kindle replaced due to similar issues. I had got the product ordered directly to India and the replacement was also shipped directly to India. They didnt charge anything extra. Just needed to spend around 15 minutes on the international lines calling them for the troubleshooting they require before processing a replacement. They dont ask for the old kindle back, so there is not much of headache of shipping the item back.

If the country of use was selected to be India in the Kindle checkout pages, then there shouldnt be much of a issue. But if it was selected as US, then I am not sure what happens.

If you have to ship back to old device try aramex. They ship back to US at the rate of $10/500 grams. Works out to be the cheapest after India Post.

Contacted the customer care. They said that they will send a replacement to my address here in India. Waiting to see the terms and conditions. Not sure whether they are going to charge for shipping. Will update here once I hear from them. Regarding shipping back - he took my credit card number initially saying that this is required in case I don't ship back the defective one. But towards the end of the call, he told me that I can recycle the existing one!
