Hi all,
I'm looking for a basic 2-speaker set within a strict budget of Rupees one thousand only. Can anybody suggest some brands/models etc. ?

^^ See my location. I got this off amazon.cn for 99 RMB which is little less than 700 INR. But i suppose in India also you would get it for less than 1000 bucks.

You in Pune right, you can try croma or DCC near Z bridge.

If your looking for a USB powered speaker then go for a Philips USB powered speaker, they have good sound quality.A review of this speakers

As for the Altec Altec Lansing BX1220, they don't seem score well when it comes to sound quality. A review at Techtree

If you don't need a USB powered speaker then go for a stereo speaker from Creative or Logitech

Also if you can consider a 2.1 speaker then you will get better sound quality than a 2.0 speaker setup by extending your budget by Rs 150

With the altec lansing, yes i too had seen reviews that the sound quality is not that great. I mean it is good for movies and ocassional music. It lacks Bass so if you love the thump then AL are not for you.

Do the philips speakers have a model number like something which i can search. I think i was not able to find them on amazon.cn or newegg.com.cn and hence bought the AL

Btw how much do the philips cost ?

I could stretch the budget a little bit but need to know of some ideas/facts.

a. Should I hold off buying for 6 months or more as USB 3.0 is round the corner?

b. If 2.1 set is around Rs. 1200/- which philips, creative or logitech models should I delve/look into? Model nos. good for knowing.

their aren't many 2.1 speakers from the philips, creative or logitech in your budget. I think logitech has one model and cretive has sbs 2.1. check out both. IMO USB spekers won't be powerful enough for a desktop setup.

Edit: checkout noname brands also, they might be better if choosen wisely :) .

USB 2.0 should just be just fine and USB 3.0 will not offer any improvements over USB 2.0 if your going to connect stereo speakers.

Do you really need USB for some reason? If your getting speakers for a desktop then an external powered speaker would be a better choice.

For a budget of Rs 1200 you can get the Altec BXR1121, it has the best sound quality at this price point.

It does have a model number, its the Philips SPA 5200. Its costs around Rs 1900 here in India. Philips also has cheaper laptop speakers from Rs 500+. It should be available in China, cause I think Philips speakers are made in China :)

why are you even thinking of a USB powered speaker :|

and that too at a sub 1.5k budget, where you wont even get decent speakers.

you'll end up paying mainly for the USB connectivity and not for the sound

and the 5V supply voltage limits the power the speakers can produce.

Buy USB speakers if you badly need the convenience/want to show off
