I lost my 32gb 3GS iPhone yesterday.
I am on my way to lodge a complaint right now.

Is there anybody (with contacts) who can help me retrieve it ?
I know it can be done since it has an inbuilt GPS and I know the IMEI / Serial no.
But the police won't help as they have to deal with tonnes of such cases everyday.

Anybody ?

I guess there was a way to kill your iPhone remotely if it was stolen. I know what I am suggesting you is not the solution you are looking for but if you can kill it remotely then you can very well trace it.

Also was it locked. Did you set it to erase data after 10 unsuccessful attempts.

Try this one.

Track the person on GPS using maps.

There was also an app which sends SMS once you change the SIM card, that would have been really useful.

If you have contacts in police then they can force the operator to trace the mobile phone using the imei number. My uncle got his n95 after two weeks using this method.

Have registered a complaint with the Sion Police Station yesterday. Trying to get some contact who knows someone / anyone at the police station.

Will keep this updated !

Just spoke to a friend about the iPhone4. Gray market 16gb 41000/-. He's asking if anyone else wants, he can buy two for 80k so the price comes to 40k per phone. Checking here if anyone's interested.

Is it a good deal at that price ?

Thanks for that link. I already went through it yesterday. All of it needs to be done before the iPhone is lost. That is not an option for me !

But it will help people protect their phones right now ! Posting it in the iphone thread !

So you leave all hope to get phone back

Unless you have Apple's MobileMe service enabled there is no way to track it.

And yes, the best way to get over the grief is the iPhone 4.. :D

just get IMEI locked so that whoever uses it you will be able to know. The govt is already cracking on non registration of IMEI nos by the cell operators. you need to get an FIR registered and not just a DDR. check the TRAI/DOT website. Individually write to all the mobile operators or try calling the number. if the iphone is very dear to you you can take help of some security detectives/agency for a fee.

In case I can't find the phone, will definitely get it locked. But I didn't get your point about the FIR. The police just won't take an FIR. They only gave me a Certificate stating the phone is lost.

The iPhone is very very dear to me. I don't mind paying a fee to retrieve it. You have any suggestions ?

@Rajshah: Try RTI now Stating issues regarding registration of FIR & Status of your complaint. RTI has helped many people in getting their work done & it will help you too.

They won't take an F.I.R because if they do , they have to actually work on that case .You really have to have some good contacts to convince them for an F.I.R otherwise tell them how expensive the phone is and you don't mind paying them a small token as appreciation if they find it .

My phone was flicked in a local train , few years back . An F.I.R using some contacts helped me get it back in 45 days . :)

Actually Police and track your phone with IMEI..When i lost just launch LG Cookie PEP 14K worth I really cried for myself..My co brother some how tracked it but unfortunately the SIM registered details was not correct so I couldn't get the thief or mobile at all

Have tried getting in touch with a few people who might be able to help. Let's see how it goes.

DDR is a daily diary report which is of no value because the same does no go into the official reports. But an FIR is. If they are not able to track down the mobile after an FIR they will have to write down the same in the official reports which goes to their seniors.

You will have to scout through local classified ads for finding if any private agency is doing it.

If you are willing to make the effort, approach the appropriate Magistrate's Court with an application under Section 156(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. If the Magistrate is convinced, he will direct the police to register an FIR.

Also, though I don't know about Mumbai, but here in Delhi, sending an email to the Commissioner of Police made the local policemen wake up, twice in my case. The cases were never really 'solved', but at least the local cops took notice of it after the emails to the Commissioner.

In one case, I lost a debit card and purchases were made on it. The local police refused to do anything at all. I even requested an Additional Sessions Judge to call up the SHO of the police station in question. Still nothing happened! Then I sent an email to the Commissioner and within days the case was transferred to Inter-State Crime Branch, stating that they had expertise in hi-tech crimes. Again, the case was never solved but at least the guys at the ISCB made some efforts.

Hope that helps you.

Well filling an RTI with the right queries will force police to file an FIR & make them work to look for your lost phone & yeah there was a very much publicized case of one man from our area who had lost his phone & police refused to file FIR. That man filed RTI & got back his cell in nxt 45 days. This case was theer in HT on front page below column 1 or 2 months ago.
