MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 with new processors released

Apple is calling the event 'Unleashed' and its expected that they would be demonstrating the true power of their new silicon which they introduced in the lower end MacBooks. Calling them lower end would not be accurate given how they outperformed the beefier Intel processors. So much so that Intel went scrambling in desperation to release a series of ads showing how non-apple laptops are better, not once comparing the actual performance of Intel vs Apple silicon.

The MacBook Pro laptops are also supposed to redesigned around the new processors which are extremely energy efficient thus leading to a more compact design. The screen bezels are supposed to even thinner than they are in the 16" MacBook Pro and introduce a new MacBook screen size of 14" instead of the regular 13" size. The displays are expected to be mini LED with higher resolutions.

The base models on the new processor, to be called M1X or M2, are supposed to start with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The processors themselves will get a bump up from 4 performance cores to 10 performance cores and 16 graphic cores from the 8 graphic cores. The cores are expected to run at a higher frequency. No wonder the event is being called Unleashed and Intel is scared out of their wits.

There are also rumours that the Touch Bar will go away in favor of regular function keys and we will have more variety of ports than just USBC ports currently available. A return to MagSafe charging is also expected.

All this however will likely cost 1,74,000 for the starting model here in India and would price it way out of reach for most of us.

Personally I would prefer that they introduce the redesigned chassis in the current base MacBook Pro model and take it from 13" to 14" with the current M1 processor in the market. I would happily take that model with a 16GB RAM option to replace my ageing MacBook 12. Had been saving every month for past 2 years for this day.

The benchmarks are mostly pointless but if the M1 Max is able to sustain RTX3060-level performance for even twice the time period on battery, then it is indeed quite a mighty device, albeit at a huge premium.

And what bench marks will give you those numbers for real world use? No one in their right mind is buying these for "gaming".

Of the top of my head the only thing that comes to mind would be Octane and Redshift. If they really do provide RTX 3060+ performance then it's a good start,

I think what people dont realize is that with raw graphics power of a middling GFX card and dedicated hardware encoders/decoders in the media engine, most pro tasks will fly on this much faster than the graphics cards that it compares to in raw benchmarks.. Its a 1-2 punch. GFX cards arent really made for creative work, their power can be used, but specialized hardware will do far better.

You can have a specific Encoding and Decoding chip, but AFAIK not a "Rendering" chip. I've been waiting patiently for Premiere Pro to be able to harness the power of the new Apple Silicon, So basically have almost no stuttery playback and smooth scrubbing of AVC based Long GOP codecs. Alas, it's utterly useless. Don't know why they can't do it while Resolve can with a a much smaller Dev team and budget.

Glad I went with the M1 air 16gb a few months back and didn't wait for this! 2 lac is crazy especially with the quality of service and support here in India.

Super Mod
get the config with 256gb and external drive ?
When the stock base configs are selling at a discount of 8% on Amazon and Flipkart, buying a 16GB Air or 13” pro at full price at Apple sound like a bad deal. Surprised nobody is selling 16GB variants till now when they are so easily available on discounts at other country stores.

Beat would be to pick up one year used machine from those looking to upgrade to the 14” or 16” pro. Again might be less in India.

I got my 14 inch MBP 10 days ago, took a month to be delivered. Watched Dune on it, looked pretty good. The most noticeable issue so far is that some animations are not smooth. They really should have a way to run at 120Hz not just VRR.

And I will repeat what everyone's saying, Apple's pricing on SSD upgrades is just ridiculous. I wanted 2TB option but for the extra 1TB they want 36k which is just crazy, I understand that it is 7400 MBps SSD but still I would've loved to have some 4k movies or long running sitcoms on my device, maybe they should include some low speed NAND chips on the logicboard to use as a secondary drive.
