1) Is it possible to merge duplicates instead of locking them? The only reason a thread should be locked is when such a discussion is not allowed on TE. If there are duplicates, then its better to merge the threads. Kinda feel that the thread lock is misused/misunderstood.

2) Is it ok to request torrents for specific movies or other copyrighted materials?

Thanks,

Raghu.
a few issues.

suppose there are two Threads on similar topic essentially, although catering different doubts specifically.

if im understanding this correctly then merging shall arrange all the posts type time stamp.

this may result in the discussing getting complicated to understand on a later date.

about torrents.

wouldnt more that half threads in P2P section (if not the entire section) be some way or other relating to the same?

nevertheless, i carry an infraction on similar issue. It was about a game and when i was new here :P

no idea if the policy has changed.

If they were catering to different doubts, they are distinct threads.

Heres an example of 2 threads that should have been merged instead of closing one of them.

http://www.techenclave.com/graphic-cards/the-gts-450-thread-174614.html

I dont keep track of all the P2P threads, so not sure what goes on in the other threads. Are there requests for specific material or just exchanging invites to various trackers?

Can you point me to the post/thread that you were awarded an infraction for?

generally post deserving the infractions get deleted..which was the case with mine.

as for p2p thing.

no i do not mean relating any specific query about any specific material.

im just trying to imply that the private tracker invites etc mean the very same thing which is illegal to discuss on TE.

rather it is an invite to join a place where it is fine to discuss and share the things forbidden over here.

it is like forum is a public place.

drinking and smoking is not allowed and lawfully punishable act at public places.

but asking for Permit rooms that allow drinking and smoking is allowed in public places...

The member in question was doing the same..just that he mentioned one or two favorites he was interested in.

The line drawn is between 'Asking for place to drink and smoke' and 'asking for a drink or smoke' in public place.

i had been issued an infraction for an offense equivalent to the latter and the member in question in this thread is following the prior act, thus not guilty :)

as for merging kind of the threads you pointed out.

i completely agree on it.

better to rather delete them than locking...that is if not merged. Otherwise it is just some e-waste imo.

Seems simple to me - If requesting game torrents is wrong, then requesting movie torrents is wrong too. The member clearly wanted the torrents for the movie "bhoot bungalow". Can I ask for the torrents of Mafia game? His initial request of torrents for old bollywood movies is also suspect. Its just equivalent to collection of copyrighted material. Can I ask for torrents of all releases of EA Games? Im hoping the mods clarify this.

Asking for invites to trackers is fine. Trackers might have legitimate content. What the user does with the invite is the users wish. If swastikrj had asked for invites to any of the trackers, there is nothing wrong.

In which case, you should have conveyed the same in the thread instead. The OP did ask you what was wrong in his part in the very same thread.

I didnt read his reply till a while later. Besides, the mods dont seem to have bothered about it anyway. Hence this thread.

There is perhaps a partial approach towards what is allowed and what is not.

there is not clear line.

should similar rules be applied to even Hachintosh and Jailbreaking then?

or the rules are only relating to those Material who actually threaten to exploit incase of breach?

similar happens with market section.

non electronic stuff is not allowed to be sold but yeah, sunglasses are always electronics from what i understand so far.

where do we draw a line between what is allowed and what is not?

Jailbreaking and Hackintosh are illegal?
No AFAIK. :)

JB - lets you run homebrewn apps on a device such as the iPod Touch, iPhone or the PSP.

Hackintosh - running the OS X on a PC. And it's legal as well.

So it's perfectly fine.

Then there is the completely unrelated issue of market rules being updated to let everyone participate.. and rules being updated with a threat of trashing threads without proper information that is never implemented. We have people posting pictures of boxes and being given warnings for over a month without any action being taken..

No one cares, I guess..

The line that distinguishes what is legal and what is illegal is very thin, especially with P2P/torrents. Generally, we do not allow specific requests for copyrighted material, though discussion about torrent sites is allowed. Almost everyone knows that most torrent sites (at least the ones most members use) are full of material that is illegal to share. However, whenever discussions happen, they get around with the technicality that torrent sites can also have legal content. In this specific case that Nin had pointed, I do feel it is a slip-up that the thread was allowed to continue for so long, especially even after it was reported. I do not know how I missed it or this thread, 'coz I make it a point to go through ALL reported posts every time I log in. Have deleted the thread now. Better late than never.

Regarding merging of duplicate posts, we decide the merit of merging vs. closing & allowing discussion in the other thread to continue undisturbed on a case by case basis. Sometimes, when the discussion in one thread has continued for long, merging it with a duplicate thread will just hinder the flow. In such cases, we generally close the thread after directing the OP to the actual thread.

@stalker: No one gets preferential treatment. There have been several instances when members were allowed to post the pictures of boxes only, whenever it was a factory sealed box that had never been opened. Sealed boxes attract better responses (at least that is what many believe). Once a seal is broken, even if it only for taking pictures, the value of the product goes down very much for obvious reasons. For this reason, sealed boxes are allowed to be pictured as is without opening them. This is not the first time this is happening, and this applies to everyone. If at all the buyer is apprehensive, he can request the seller to post pics after opening the box. That is up to the buyer and seller.

I hope that clarifies.

Thanks for the clarification and deleting the thread :)

Im happy that significant thought goes into such a decision. It would be nice if you could comment on the 2 threads listed in Post#3. They would seem like perfect candidates for merge, rather than lock. I have noticed similar thread in the past too getting locked. It would be nice to understand the reasons for such decisions.
