I don't know if this is the right thread to discuss about this, so Admins, kindly move it wherever needed.

I wanted to know the importance of M2 and SATA express connectors which are available on Mobos these days. Is it worth spending some extra cash on them? It is being said that they will be helpful in future, but how long is that period? And if that time comes, who all will be benefited? As in those who are having only a SATA HDD and an SSD? or they need something more than that?

Thank you.

In my opinion it not really critical at this point of time. The SATA express interface will allow the SSD type drives to overcome the current limits of the interface which are holding back mechanical drives.
Thought the M2 is being overlooked as a desktop interface and is labeled as a fad for laptops, it looks like the best proposition as it does away with the overheads of regular SSD, mainly the external chassis and a few other associated components. You will also have the option to pick up an M2 to SATA express adapter should the need arise.
If your picking up a new motherboard then go for it - Z97 / H97 platforms are offering both M2 or SATA express.

Thanks DarkNight. I am assembling a new PC, therefore had this thought in my mind. Was planning to go with Gigabyte H97M-DH3, but now may be with Asus H97 Pro.
