Avi has been chosen as the MOTM May 2014 for his top contribution towards increasing forum activity by posting new threads and engaging users.
Please join me in congratulating him and lets read what he has to tell us.
Tell us about yourself:
Outside TE, I am known as Avinash and I am a Kannadiga from a small place in North Karnataka. I am just a regular dude who recently passed the age of 'I am pissed of with everything'
I like writing code and contributing to open source projects on Github. I am interested in mobile devices and wearable computing. I regularly watch movies and read books. Anytime you can say hi to me and can easily strike a conversation about almost any topic. Anything other than about me would be mostly uninteresting.
What is your educational experience and what is your full time job:
I have completed engineering in Computer Science stream. I am a software engineer and I earn my roti by writing code, which is mostly Python (2.7) nowadays. I work in a research project funded by Government of India in one of the premier institutes of India. Work is fun for me and I like what I am doing.
But currently I am on a long break from work. These days I am trying to learn Swift which was recently launched by Apple in WWDC 2014. It's a fun language I would say.
My earlier work was to troll people online. I enjoyed it. No, I did not get paid for that.
How did you become interested in online communities and get hooked onto TE:
I was a Chip forum member earlier with same username. However Chip was filled with bunch of teenagers and there was hardly any fun other than flame wars. In one of the threads I came to know about TE and its marketplace. I think I was looking to buy one of those USB GSM modems. Back then I had started writing product reviews, so I registered and posted my reviews here as well.
However it was Open Source/Linux section which got me hooked to TE. There were so many threads and information, I remember spending days trying to read most of them. And also General Talk. I think I registered when Techboi was active, asking about what kind of jeans pants we wear. I felt GT to be a great place to hangout, participate in off topic discussions. And of course trolling
(Hey anyone remember Gannu Play Ra.One?
)
What do you do for fun and relaxation:
I am an avid reader and thats the only 'good' hobby I have. Other than that I mostly troll people online in Quora. It's fun writing anonymous fake answers. Last night I was an Indian father of 17 year pregnant teen girl. I have an active account on 4chan too. I also lurk in one of those deep web dark sites.
(or in other words, I have no real life
)
What are your favorite Books, Movies, TV shows, Music, Games, Foods, Beverages:
I watch all kinds of movies, from genres ranging Drama to Sci fi. But I am mostly big fan of crime/drama/thrillers and dark humor genre. I am a big movie buff and have rated more than 1500 movies on IMDB. Even in books I look for same genres I mentioned. I have huge collection of books, more than 1000. Most of them I inherited from my father.
It's very difficult to cite any favorites, not an easy task. However my this year favorites (so far) would be City of Thieves (book) and Lucia (movie). In TV, I am a big fan of South Park. No other TV series can come close as this one
Not much of a foodie, but eat anything which is vegetarian. I crave for Dosas.
What gadgets and electronic items do you own right now:
I am mostly a Apple products' user, use OS X for my daily usage and also at work. And other than that I fancy Linux, use Debian.
I have 3 year old Dell XPS L501x (i7 740, 4GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, nVidia GT 435M) running Mavericks 10.9.3. I have been Hackintoshing since the Leopard days and I don't think I will ever switch to any other OS than OS X. Looking forward try Yosemite.
I use iPhone 4 16GB as my main mobile running iOS 6.1.4 and jailbroken. Samsung Focus and Nokia N1650 as secondary mobiles.
I have iPad Air 16GB running 7.1.1 and jailbroken. The best tablet I ever owned. And I also have Nook Color (running CM10), which I hardly use. Android tablets suck.
I am waiting for iPhone 6. If I am impressed then I will surely upgrade. Old timers would know how was the transformation of iPhone from iPhone 3 to 3GS, 3GS to 4. After that it was just 'meh'. But in no way in hell I am switching to Android or Windows. And I am also looking to build a Hackintosh desktop in future.
Recently bought couple of Raspberry Pis and trying to learn about cluster computing. And also about home automation. Successfully built a wireless switch controlled by Raspberry Pi. Will be soon buying Arduino and ATmega28 and start some low level coding.
Anything else you would like to add:
Be good, have fun and live life to fullest. And troll people online.
How do we find you online besides TE:
I rarely blog, but here it's link: http://blog.iavin.com. You can stalk me on Github, facebook or twitter.
We thank @avi for being around to contribute to the forum and also for taking time to answer our questions in such detail.
We will be sending across his MOTM Mug shortly and as before request him to update the thread with the pics once he has decided where to place it.
Please join me in congratulating him and lets read what he has to tell us.
