Just got MTNL's TriBand 256 kbps ADSL connection yesterday. My experience so far ( hardware/software gurus may already know most of this stuff, but it may help newbies like me ) :
First of all, the connection was up just four days ( on a Sunday ! ) after I applied for it, I was really surprised. MTNL has really improved. The ADSL modem is the UTStarcom UT-300R2U ( brand new ! ) with one 10/100 Ethernet port and one USB 1.1 port.
The modem has a web based ( 192.168.1.1 ) config / setup. The funny thing is that this page ( mostly ) takes ages to load. The MTNL engineer said "Thumara system slow hai", "Windows XP isse bahut fast hai", etc. But what I feel ( correct me if I'm wrong ) is that the modem has to be on for a minute or so before trying to access that page ( or any other page/site ). If anyone has experience with ADSL modems, please comment. He struggled for about one hour, went away and came back later, took about an hour again. Mainly because the config page wouldn't load.
The modem has a id + password. Set it from the Advanced -> WAN -> PPPoE page. The engineer never told me about the id + password. The id = your phone no and password = your CA no ( see the MTNL bill ). I changed the password at the MTNL website as soon as he left, as any slightly paranoid ( smart ? ) user would. I could not use the net after that. I could ping the modem, but not the dns server. That's when I called MTNL and they told me about the id+password in the modem. After changing it there, everything's OK.
The engineer got it working via the Ethernet port, but wasn't able to get it working via the USB port. I might try it later.
Max download speed is slightly more than 25 KBps, which seems OK, 256 kbps is approx 25 KBps, right ?
Finally, the engineer who came here expected to have the wiring to the PC in place. Mine did not ( he offered to send a technician the next day ), the PC is away from the phone. Luckily I had some phone wire and ran it to the PC. He did not even have a screw-driver, so I had to give him all the tools required.
