MTNL Triband : first impressions.

Just got MTNL's TriBand 256 kbps ADSL connection yesterday. My experience so far ( hardware/software gurus may already know most of this stuff, but it may help newbies like me ) :

First of all, the connection was up just four days ( on a Sunday ! ) after I applied for it, I was really surprised. MTNL has really improved. The ADSL modem is the UTStarcom UT-300R2U ( brand new ! ) with one 10/100 Ethernet port and one USB 1.1 port.

The modem has a web based ( 192.168.1.1 ) config / setup. The funny thing is that this page ( mostly ) takes ages to load. The MTNL engineer said "Thumara system slow hai", "Windows XP isse bahut fast hai", etc. But what I feel ( correct me if I'm wrong ) is that the modem has to be on for a minute or so before trying to access that page ( or any other page/site ). If anyone has experience with ADSL modems, please comment. He struggled for about one hour, went away and came back later, took about an hour again. Mainly because the config page wouldn't load.

The modem has a id + password. Set it from the Advanced -> WAN -> PPPoE page. The engineer never told me about the id + password. The id = your phone no and password = your CA no ( see the MTNL bill ). I changed the password at the MTNL website as soon as he left, as any slightly paranoid ( smart ? ) user would. I could not use the net after that. I could ping the modem, but not the dns server. That's when I called MTNL and they told me about the id+password in the modem. After changing it there, everything's OK.

The engineer got it working via the Ethernet port, but wasn't able to get it working via the USB port. I might try it later.

Max download speed is slightly more than 25 KBps, which seems OK, 256 kbps is approx 25 KBps, right ?

Finally, the engineer who came here expected to have the wiring to the PC in place. Mine did not ( he offered to send a technician the next day ), the PC is away from the phone. Luckily I had some phone wire and ran it to the PC. He did not even have a screw-driver, so I had to give him all the tools required.

256kbps = 32KB :)

i get 27-28KB

well ya the CC has def improved a hell lot!!

but the fact is that the people who come to install the stuff are usually bigger noobs then the ones they are installing for!!!

did he install the USB drivers that come with the modem?? ( on a cd)

and you can only get into the router settings page once the status light is up and blinking :)

The USB drivers were installed. I'll try it out sometime soon, now that I've got a good ( sort of ) understanding of this stuff.

One more crib : the guy, without asking me and before I realised what he was doing, deleted all the cookies & offline web pages and reset the IE options to "default".

Just nitpicking : When a ISP says "256kbps" does that include the TCP/IP overheads or is it "256kbps" of real/useable data ? Comm overheads can be quite high, so the 25 KBps max download speed that I achieved is pretty good, what ? The 25 KBps that I mentioned in the first post is the value reported by my download manager ( Fresh Download ), most probably that is 25 KBps of the file ( without the overheads).

Yes 256kbps includes all the overheads. 25kBps sounds fine, though you might be tune some of your settings to get the extra juice.

Test your connection speed at www.dslreports.com They also give some ways to fine tune your connection.

Raghu.

one of the ways to increase your speed is to have no parallel lines in your house..

if you want to then... have them after triband.. that is after the phone line connects to your router.... you have a break b4 that and you`ll get a slower connection...!!

MTNL gave me a unopened (!) box with the UTStarcom modem. It included a splitter - one line to phone, other to modem. I'm using that.

Right now I have the 400MB = Rs 199 plan. There are a number of plans available. The MTNL website http://mumbai.mtnl.net.in/ has the details but I'm not sure if the site is updated regularly. The form you get from MTNL has a list of all the plans. You can upgrade/downgrade your plan from the 1st of the following month. Take a copy of your phone bill when applying, the form is quite simple, you can fill it there itself if you want to.
The way I'm going ... MTNL should give me a commission or something.

^^ lol

actually thier site is updated :).. ya they dont bring out plans too often .. so well no hassles to upgrade the site much!! ;)

you can apply on the phoine.. i`m gonna try and do that in a couple of days :)

will post back :)

If you really think it is so much better, go for it. In what way is Dlink better ? As I mentioned in your other thread, there are many advantages of going with the modem supplied by MTNL.

the dlink cpe is pretty good :)..

dunno abt the new UTstarcom... modems...

i applied online for a new connnection.. now lets see what they gimme :)

more importantly when they gimme ...

PS - finally attained complete automation ... :) feels really good :)

Hey PoBoy Cool Yaar,

I am totally Agree with you about the advantages of going with the modem supplied by MTNL.

I didn't suggest to go For Dlink in Open Market, but I just expressed my Exprience with Dlink Modem, I have for Dial Up and also my Friend Circle to insist on Dlink and my Hardware Dealer too.:hap2:

Hey PoBoy......If U r using the MTNL's TriBand 256 kbps ADSL connection with 400 mb limit then tat really sucks..........coz it mere cheating......

.....its like giving a person a Ferrari with a speedlimit of 40kmph.........Wont u guys think tat.......400mb for 256kbps......:@ :@

Unfortunately I am also using tat bulls***t connection.......and Iam planning to move over......maybe to Exatt:huh: ....with a 256kbps connection and download of 10Gb :wow: ...for abt 600-700 bucks.....

So guys wat U think abt exatt...

Exatt isn't available where I live, I think. Tata Indicom offers 400MB (256kbps ) for Rs 414/-. Plus other local "ISP"s and cablewallas, all lousy.

The plan you mention above seems too good to be true. Let us know how it works out.

By the way, you'll still be travelling at 40 kmph. 256kbps on MTNL = 256kbps on any other ISP. Let me know if I'm wrong.

And, one more thing, I've been using MTNL Triband for 12 days now. It's never been down/slow/any-other-problem.

hmm 256kbps on mtnl .. maynot necessarily = 256kbps on another ISP.. i can vouch for that.

@knoughtyd

rather then the 10gb limit.. go for thr 50gb limit plan.. for 1500 bucks if you can afford it. btw where do yo ustay??

the porblem with exatt is that it would be coming through the cable operator.. whom i dont have trust in. though pls let me know your experiences with exatt if you plan to take it.

or change your triband plan to the Night plan. wherein its free frm 12 am - 8am .. ( you can download from around 15-30gb in a month on this plan depending on how much you download/speed you get /from where you download)..!

10GB ... 50GB ... wtf are you guys downloading ? The whole net ? Let me know, maybe I'm missing something here ...

Where do you save all those GBs ?
