Just yesterday I got new connection and the guy who is there while installing, on my enquiry reply me that New Routers form China is crappy and lot of complints about it is pending with MTNL.:(

He alos agree that Dlink is one of the best router but MTNL stop providing it any more.

What you say GUYS ?

Also How does it matter to u ? If ur router / modem has some faults mtnl will fix it for u ! So How does it bother u ? And yeah raag is right why go with MTNL when u have aritel ??

Answering ur question yes the dlink I Think was really gud , even airtel has stopped providing it now they give beetel instead !

It just looks crappy in my opinion. Mine is also the chinese one (Huawei..) provided with Dataone, it is easy to configure and gives great performance. I even used it for several days on a go, it heats up but doesn't fail. and the best part is, if anything goes wrong you just get it replaced by BSNL.:hap2:

ya the dlink router is too goood!!

the problem was dlink was having problems with mtnl... mtnl needed 400 odd routers a day. but dlink provided only 200... that` where the real problem began..

i guess it doesnt look good with the chinese ones either ..!

and airtel aint everywhere... i would say why bother abt airtel when mtnl is everywhere?? what say!

In what way exactly is the modem/router crappy ?

Huge Rplacement or Service Required in few months.

Also How does it matter to u ? If ur router / modem has some faults mtnl will fix it for u !

MTNL have shortage for NEW ONE.

What will they give in Replace if router is not repairable/Dead?

If Rpairable HOW much chai pani you should give to get Router Repair in 1-2 days?

Airtel is not available in my AREA till today.

what chai pani yaar ? Its there duty to provide u with net ! they r not giving it to u for free right ? so if there is any problem they will fix it for free !

I think there is some problem in either the firmware of the dlink router or the mtnl dns servers , since i do get loss of internet connectivity randomly. the modem shows it is connected to mtnl servers and the ip addresses are correct (in the modem UI status 192.168.1.1) but it does not resolve any names effectively rendering it useless for surfing. the only alternative is to restart / reboot the modem and everything is ok ....until the next dns connectivity loss. i have tried this on numerous m/b with fresh XP installs. one thing i had noticed is that whenever MSN is active in the background this behaviour occurs more frequently. (MSN ver 7.5 Build(7.5.0322))

I had downloaded a newer firmware from the Australian dlink website but i dunno whether it will help since i have not flashed it yet. i do not want to unnecessarily flash it if there is a known problem with mtnl DNS servers. will changing the DNS servers in the modem to the VSNL ones help ??

Any of you mtnl users face similar problem ??

yup im facing the same problem here

you guys using the USB to connect to the internet? this usually happens with USB..

also which is your firmware version dj?

this is mine VER V2.00B01T01.ML.20050530.. its the stable version..:) .... and i think the latest.. ya even i got the firmware from the australian website... but havent upgraded it. cause itw working fine here..

you can try taking your router to the dlink office..(will try to find the address). and tell em to upgrade your firmware.. if there is a new one available... they would do it .. for a small price though...

but if your having a problem. tell mtnl.. they would do something abt it .... for free..

Yes it is the same version. i think all of the dlink modems have this same firmware of 30th may 2005.

No i always use the ethernet ports.

But the problem is completely random .... for e.g. since this morning i had to reset the modem only twice so far ....;)

I will try to flash the new firmware and see what happens ....

why do you reset your router???????????????

just switch it off and back on!

ya even i have had that problem b4.. it usually happens , when you put yout router in always on mode... (advance - ppp - always on ).. you keep your router always on.. and sometimes evven though you have a IP address.. you cant do anything online..

also you can try this..

try keeping your router to - disconnect after say 5 min of idle(i kept it at 3min) .. an then see... :)..

when its idle for 5 min .. it would disconnect automatically.. but if you do sayt login to msn/yahoo or wanna chk some site it`ll reconnect again!

err by reset i mean power cycling i.e. switch off - switch on.
RE: that setting i will try it and report back ...Thanks.

I face similar issues somtimes only becoz of google web accelerator otherwise the router(through USB) is working pretty well for me since Oct - 2005 with good stable speeds.

Regards.

yup same here i always use the ethernet ports

I too get same problem of random disconnection. I was using ethernet, but now am using USB, as I need ethernet to connect both my PCs. ( damn! thats not working either :bleh:)

Say, if I select "disconnect after 5 mins, does it reconnect automatically when needed? And what if I'm downloading? If theres no activity due to lack of seeds/peers, then will it disconnect?

I'm getting real confused. Which is the crappy modem/router ? The UTStarcom one provided by MTNL, or the D-Link one, or both ?

And, if I'm not mistaken, UTStarcom is a Fortune 1000 company based in California, USA. It has research and design operations in the United States, China, Korea and India.

Where exactly are the D-Link modems manufactured ? Wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be China or a far east / third world country.

@rohan ya you would get disconnected if there is 0 activity due to lack of seeds/peers.. but i have been using this seetting since july last year.. and havent yet had a disconnection during the night.. so well i think you can safetly use the setting :). and ya even i use torrents ...

think the dlink routers are manufactured in the dlink factory at goa.. or maybe some other factory somewhere else.. :P . .. but definately in india...

and i think people are referring to the UTstarcom modem`s as crappy.. cause they havent yet heard the name and .. most users havent had a problem with the dlink modem.. esp the ones that came with a firmware dated 30/5/05...
