I am very disorganized in general & have been lately cleaning up the mess.

I have music files mp3/wma scattered all over 4 hdd 11 different partitions, so 1st thing I have done is to make a separate partition 100 gb just for music.

Now in this I will categorize by my interest such as

english love songs > various artist/films

hindi love songs > male/female/ dute

ghazals..>> artist>albums

So I will have deep nested directories & now onwards try to keep music organized on one hdd

I use only WMP 12 to play songs & it does have some kind of add to library feature which adds up all the songs on hdd then onwards I can just search the tags & it brings up the list.

I need to edit /rename/transfer some information in mp3 files, what organizing software would you recommend which an do all I need?

I also need to "rate songs" so the rating should be visible in WMP so I can choose songs as per rating/artists/genre etc etc.

There are many files which have wrong file names but have correct title (song name) so I need to transfer song name to rename the file with song name.

Would suggest you try and use tags for organisation. Keep your directory folders simple, say just create folders for Genre of the music eg. ghazals, love songs etc.

100GB translates to under 1000 albums which any software can handle.

But if you want more power+freedom then try this

I surely need more power & freedom but cant this be done with WMP?

I only use WMP to play have never explored it beyond that but seems it is also capable to have some kind of organizing.

Downloading media jukebox now

You most certainly can use WMP for your collection, i was merely suggesting an alternative for those that grow out of WMP could use :)

WMP is prettier but has its limits after a while. And you did use the word 'organise'.

i know some people might bash me for this...but i love iTunes (of the Apple/iPod fame)

it allows me to manage my collection easily...it can also auto manage my collection once i have set the parameters. any new song(s) that i add are automatically sorted and sequenced in the proper genre/artist/album listing. i sometimes have to rewrite some of the tags here and there....but it works fine!

MediaMonkey Rocks!

No issues in managing my modest collection of 10000+ songs stored on my WHS. :ohyeah:

What kind of limit I may face, bit more detail would be helpful.

BY organizing I meant that now onwards once I add more music files it should catalog automatically & I should be able to search for it. Since I am new to this I don't know what else can I do with organizing.

I 1st would want to try with WMP if I can else I now have 2 more softwars as members have suggested.

Is there any video tutorial for WMP or other software?

EDIT

just found this video tutorial

The limit i mean is that WMP will make you do things in a certain way. This is the only way possible. Depending on the diversity of your collection it might not always be appropriate.

Looking at the WMP tutorial, it indicates only support for standard tags, artist, album, rating, genre etc. This is slightly better than using windows explorer but still far away from being comprehensive ie no support for custom tags. Also I did not notice any use of panes like iTunes has for selecting music and the soft i recommended is waay more advanced than iTunes.

Simple examples

- show a list of tracks that are so many stars that you have not heard in over a year.

- if you have a portable player and want to only load certain songs based on a formula.

I think at this stage you should start with WMP as it will be better than windows explorer that you use currently. And its quite simple but when you want to make more complex queries you will not be abe to do so.

This is how it works with organisers

windows explorer -> WMP -> iTunes -> Media Monkey or similar JRiver MJ -> Jriver MC

you are at the first stage and moving to the next :)

WMP vs mediamonkey I hear a sound quality difference.

WMP is giving me better quality sound at equalizer preset > classical

how to get the same (fuller quality) with mediamonkey?

I have been trying 3 media players

WMP, media jukebox, mediamonkey, mp3tag editor

I realize that to organize 4873 files as of now & many more will be added from the Cds I have to rip.

I need to fill/edit a lot of info such as missing artist info, genre, album art, rename title correct file names, out of the 3 media players which is best for such task.

WMP cant get the right album cover & related info from the internet, 90% its wrong.

I have a used book library software CollectorZ it downloaded all the info from the net based on the ISBN no.

So cant it be done same with mp3 files? what basic info do I need to fill so I get the info from the net rather than filling it all manually.

As of now I have entered genre field using Mp3Tag & it does many such job easily, if I edit something in one software will the change automatically show in other software?

The library I make will be bound by the software or any software can read it ?

Do you mean to fill manually, one i recommended to you is very easy for this. It can populate tags from the filename if already present.

Manually is the only way i know of to get the job done 100%.

The prog i recommended can get the info if its in JRivers own database whilst ripping CDs otherwise you have to fill it manually. Their database is not as comprehensive as freedb. You might be better off with other software if you want this to be done automatically.

- Picard from Music brainz is quite good for this i hear, it uses signatures and can identify the tracks and gets the info from the musicbrainz dB.
- MP3tag is another that can use different sources as well
- mediamonkey.

Assuming this fairly mainstream stuff, if its more bollywood or in local languages i think you will be on your own :(

If all files are mp3, then you have to use ID3v2 tags and write them back to the files. There is a potential problem here.

Some fields used by Jriver and WMP are not standard, they are proprietary and are used because there is no existing standard for them. Usually these tags are written as comments. They will not transfer over between players as they are not aware how to read.

Only the standard tags written to the file will be transferred over. See this to get an idea of which tags are common between players.

Its better to test with a few files so you understand better what is entailed here rather than doing everything.

Get hold of Foobar. One stop destination for all your needs. Just make sure you search around enough to get all the required plug-ins.
I tried it but seems i don't like its interface at all, haven't gone in deep but cant it download album art from the internet? As of now I will skip foobar.

I am now finally settling for media jukebox as it is able to read all the editing I did in mp3tag editor & it itself allows me to edit most of the things, now I am understanding why WMP is too basic.

Media monkey is equally good but its sound /equalizer does not sound as good as Media jukebox though I will try more settings to compare.

Yes Media jukebox allows to edit mass tags in the entire albums or selected list. there are many rare collections of world music & it seems I wont find much info on the web, so I have to do it manually, but when ever I try to find album art on the internet the window remains blank, not sure if its even connection to the web or not?

Many songs have info in the wrong field, some have album name exchanged with artist name can I exchange /rename this automatically with Media jukebox or maybe with mp3tag?

Album art is a 50-50 affair, best is manually.

But if you are confident of the filenames then you can use those to populate the artist & name fields.

You can do it MJ easily if you know the pattern, just select a few files->right click->library tools->move/copy fields. Select source, destination and for action use flip-flop. otherwise you can even mass move tags from a field to another. Try with a few first, if it goes wrong, you can undo with ctrl+z.

Recommend you check out their forums.
