I will be starting with my MX 5021 mod soon . Will be needing some products from DIGIKEY -US .

DigiKey Corp. | Electronic Components Distributor | United States Home Page

Wanted to check if anyone else would be interested in modding their MX 5021. For more info check these 2 threads.

The components that need to be imported are :

1)22uF or 47uF 50v – minimum 6 nos. per mod.

(I already have some with me so might need just 2-3 of these )

2)0.47uF 63v – Vishay MKP - minimum 2 nos. per mod(for 2 satellite)

3) standby components for the above ^

Rest of the components for the mod can be sources locally.

Anyone interested in getting any other stuff from DIGIKEY ,let me know.

Approx price would be Rs. 400-500 .(estimate)

Will update the pricing depending on number of people interested as the price of components depends on the quantity ordered.

Rest of the stuff is available for cheap locally and wont cost more than 100-200 bucks total.

So the complete mod will cost 800-1000 Rs. maximum.(depending upon soldering equipment at disposal)

Approximate cost for minimum no of components (2 Vishay's MKP + 6 22uf Panasonics ) would be ~Rs.400-500 . The pricing is just an approximate . Might go up or down during final order.
* It totally depends on the no of people interested cause there is a big difference in the pricing. for eg. 1 component cost is ~1$ and for 10 components it is 0.8$ and goes on decreasing with more no. of quantities. Also minimum order should be of 25$ or so for shipping .

Will contact Sangram regarding the pricing ,shipping etc. as he has experience with ordering on DIGIKEY.

^ yeah hardly few months of warranty remaining(~ 3mnths) and even Gannu sent me some of his spare/left over components so I thought I will just go ahead with the mod when I get free time and some help with soldering :P.

I guess not many people are interested, If I dont get a good no. of quantity ,I will have to skip DIGIKEY and use local Thermax instead of those Vishays.

BTW, how do you plan to source items from Digikey?

Do you know some one having a digikey card or any other person who can arrange from digikey? I'm asking because importing items from Digikey was always a big headache.

If you find some contact please let me know. I've a regular requirement for components from Digikey or Farnell.

BTW the components you mention will be available easily with RS components India. Try that. It will be absolutely hassle free.

It is very easy to purchase from RS components. Just find items on their web site.. make a call to their local office and tell them the RS part number of the items you wish to purchase. They order the components and deliver it to you. Website prices include shipping but not the taxes (12.5% on mot of the items). Since my company deals regularly with RS, we deal on a 30 days credit basis, i.e payment after 30 days of receiving the items.

Now you tell me the contact person for Digikey. I know a person but he billed me approx 30000 for the items on digikey whose dollar equivalent price was around 7000.

There's no 'contact person' at D-K. I add items to my cart and check out using Paypal. Never overcharged or overbilled, and the items reach me in five days flat, max one week.

If you are a company, it's easy to order from RS. Their prices are however completely unreasonable, as they're based on UKP equivalent and not USD (stocking is not done in India AFAIK). For a small-time individual with a small order, RS is mostly not interested anyway, so I stick with D-K for their service for retail. If you've been overcharged, you should have complained. I never had it happen to me, or anyone else I know for that matter, so if your case was genuine you should take it up with customer service.

Since we can't order through Digikey directly on behalf of our company, I'd to go through a middleman who provided the bill in the name of my company and he took his cut. So I can't take it up customer service.

@bb, can't help at all, as obviously we don't know who padded up the costs. For companies you should probably try contacting D-K directly (Singapore, not US) - they have a helpline and you could probably get similar terms to RS (wave those terms in their face, if you're a big enough customer they'll relent).

@Eddy: Farnell is not geared to cater to individual customers. I had a long chat with the guys who were handling the business (I was in advertising, and Farnell was a prospect for us). Apparently their Bangalore office told them that it was impossible (??????) to do web business in India with a focus on direct retail. Maybe they were just trying to save themselves the hassle of a payment gateway and building a India property, so have decided to focus on corporate customers and sub-agents.

There is no problem using D-K, except for the minimum order value of $25. It does not anyway make sense to order less. If it's a single project, you could try contacting local distris (sasmit on this board did something similar, he has sources for most National parts).

chic_magnet , Check the links in the first post. I will be modding it according to Gannu's guide and Sangram's thread .

I have got most of the components from Gannu, I needed 2 Vishay's caps but since not many people are interested and I myself dont have enough cash to make a big order,I will be substituting the vishay's by local Thermax caps as suggested by Sangram .

Will close this Thread soon ,incase I get the stuff locally .
