hi..i am a bit confused regarding the choice of speakers...till recently i was planning to go for MX5021..but reading the experience of many members of this forum..there came this confusion. to go for MX or look for some other alternative..being a musician my main aim is Music..and little movies.(80% and 20 %).also was looking at MA Studiophile AV 40..but this looked kinda small...(i may be wrong because my ears are not trained to decipher good speaker systems..and to add on to that...i am a drummer :bleh: )

i have a flexible budget, which flexes from 7 to 15 K..cant flex more.

now the question is to what should i go for ?

MX5021 or MA Studiophile AV40 or enter into the audiophile territory with my shoestring budget of 15 k.

i know you guys can help and have got helped before too...and i would be glad if you guys could be specific like what amp/speaker i should go for ..or not to go for..TIA

and i live in Delhi..

regards
victor

At 15K there are many possibilities so forget anything multimedia.

I have not heard the stuophiles however i reckon they'd have a very flat and honest response which may not be suitable for regular listening. In delhi there are a few local amp makers. Or you can order a pulz/norge from mumbai.
In case you are ready to go hifi, which considering your budget you should. I had a chance to listen to the Tannoys lowest end offering the Mercury F1 customs recently.

These speakers are sheer VFM in a beautiful packaging. At around 8-9K per pair you wont be disappointed at all.

They were powered with a pathetic entry level sherwood AVR still they managed to impress. Even the entry level norge would put the sherwood AVR to shame IMO.

So the suggestion here is take a audition of the Tannoys, if you like them pick them up take them to Norge/Pulz and audition them with the choice of amp in the range of 6-8 K and pick whatever you like best.

Other options in the range i've heard are the Wharfs 8.1 but would not recommend them against the Tannoys.

These are 8ohm loads so will be easily driven as well, so you can even settle for the norge offering of 30 WPC into 8 ohms.

PS:Wait for the pros to pitch in.

Drummer, eh? Why don't you get to chandni chowk and get a nice set of boomers?

Just kidding OK, don't get ruffled. Guitarists always poke fun at drummers, like you probably already know. :D

Rave (not the moderator, the brand) makes some nice speakers and they're based in Delhi, IIRC. Cosmic is a local brand that is also readily available, and the Sonodyne Sonus are worth a listen. You could probably pick up a Cosmic amp and some nice bookshelves. Assuming the amp sets you back 5K, with 10K you could get some Wharfedales or Monitor Audios, but I would audition a few local brands. It's been quite a while but some of the speaker manufacturers in and around Delhi were producing respectable stuff at bargain-basement prices a long time back. You might turn up gold.

Or crap. In which case, the Wharfedales may be your best bet (I don't fancy them much, but you might like them).

Also consider the Audioengine AE5, I'm beginning to hear a few pros using them for a reality check monitor, which is a good balance between the studio monitoring systems and hifi systems.

@sarang; The frequency response curves have very little to do with the final voicing of the speaker, IMO. Dispersion patterns and power response are far more accurate measurements of how a speaker will behave in a given environment. Studio monitors are built for non-reverberant environments and close distances, which is why they tend to sound overbearingly shrill and muddled up in home environments. This can be corrected by EQ, but the power requirements then increase well beyond the limit of most cheap home amps. Studio monitors do have frequency correction tools, but those only tend to have minor effects (+ or - 2dB is all that is offered).

And the MX have deteriorated tremendously in quality. I've heard of popping noises, complete malfunction, breaking or poorly assembled subs. The product assembler or specs may have changed, a very unfortunate end to a very capable speaker. I wouldn't recommend it at all.

let me Guess...u got to be the lead guitarist.. ....i get this regularly from ours... and sometimes worse:P ...

i heard the Rave speakers couple of months ago and was quite impressed it was paired with marantz a/v..but marantz was not affordable :hap5: .

so if i go for rave which amp would be most suitable....apart from cosmic amp..(and is it easily available in Delhi?).

thanks sangram:hap2:

@ sarang: thanks for the reply i would also definitely check out the Tannoys.

Rhythm, actually - so yeah, you get it from everybody.

On a serious note, Cosmic should be available pretty much anywhere in Delhi, if it still is in business. I remember seeing them on street shops and the owners would sell if you asked nicely. Some of their older models were built like tanks.
