My Review of the Asus G53SW-A1.

When I was offered a job at Hyderabad, I had to leave my decent Desktop behind. I had the vostro 1510 with me which the post grad college gave me. Core 2 duo 1.8GHZ, I upgraded the ram to 4GB DDR2, 160GB HDD and a 8400GS Nvidia Graphics card.

Given todays scenario, a person like me will virtually die using that config.Yet I was using that same laptop when I shifted to Hyd till November. In October only I decided that I needed something better. There were heavy discussions between me and my fellow roomies whether to buy a laptop or a Desktop. The major point was, during shifting, transporting a desktop is tedious. Second major point, you cant watch tv shows/movies in a typical room style. So in the end it was decided that Ill buy a laptop.

After the first leg of research I had decided to buy the either the Dell XPS 15 or the Lenovo Y570. The research showed that the lenovo had a GT555. but what it also told that Dell was far superior in the long term than lenovo. I was almost getting ready to book the Dell when one of my school buddies from US pinged me.He told me that instead of buying in India, he can bring one from US. So now the plate became bigger. I now had lot of options to choose from.

My criteria was a decent desktop replacement. I do a lot of Photoshop(like working on 20-40 Camera Raw Layers and putting masks and editing stuff)I do some sound design in fruity loops with lots of VSTs loaded. and I am a hobbyist gamer.

Option 1: Alienware M14x. Was out of my budget.given the config I was looking for.

Option 2: Sager: the only crib was its not serviced in India.

Option 3: MSI: Their too was out of budget.

Option 4: the Asus G53 series. Bang on Budget.

Now I had to research between the G53 SW and SX. upon digging in forums many pros said to go for the SW because of the higher bus rate than the SX. 192bit vs 128bit.

SO Finally here it is.

I think a few people here already own/owned bigger brothers of this. But thought of sharing my personal review.

Those asking for the specs its here:

I7 2630QM 2GHZ

8GB DDR 3 1333 RAM

750GB 7200RPM HDD. Slot for 2nd HDD available.

Nvidia GTX460M 1.5GB DDR5 VRAM

FULL HD Led Backlit Display.(Default is Gloss)

Usual Bells and Whistles.

Exterior:

The Design is the popular stealth bomber design. Some say its a rip of the Lamborgini laptop edition to which I sort of agree.

The laptop construction is heavy duty. The finish is a rubberized plastic. the plus point is it looks sleek and a premium jazz. the negative point is its damn fingerprint friendly. Ill not say fingerprint but rather oil friendly. Our fingers and hands by default emit oil, that is caught on this lid. So if you want to show to your friends half of the time its all Patchy.

A central hinge is the key point for the Lid movement. Its one big heavy and thick hinge. Given the design, the Lid does not go all the way back like say for exmaple a Vostro 1510 which is now my backup lappy.

The ASUS logo on the lid is backlit, so when you keep your Light options to ON, the logo glows.its not heavy or flashy like an Alienware but its subtle.

The right side of the touchpad is dominated by the Sticker and the ROG logo.

The Cooling:

The G53 also follows the Asus design cooling system. There are two vents at the back. The Left is for the CPU while the right one is for the GPU. The cooling performance for me is pretty awesome. Example I have played BF3 on Ultra at 1400 resolution for hours and the Temperatures did not go to the dangerous zone. The second point that I personally love since the vents are at the back, your gadgets or hands are not the recepient of the hot air. I usually charge my mobile via USB. I am making this reference, as to when using on my office Latitude vs the Asus G53. I use the Coolermaster U2 notebook cooler and that also affects your cooling to a degree.

Locks:

They have provided two kensington lock sockets for securing your laptop with a lock.

The Keyboard:

I think for this price range this is one of those laptops that has a full blown keyboard. The Numpad is a welcome addition. The Keys are those chiclet type design and are a pleasure to use. they are really soft and proper responsive. After extensive using the Latitude 4310 for hours, using this keyboard feels nice. The keyboard is backlit. You can adjust the brightness of the backlight with a certain combination. I mainly keep backlit off since I work in a bright environment. But when the lights go out or if I work in a dark environment then its an advantage.

Display:

6643260487_315de1c894_b.jpg

The Display that I took is a Full HD LED Backlit Panel. The Panel that came with the laptop was an AUO panel. the colors and brightness is good.

But after a few weeks of use, the LCD had a hardware fault. A RGB vertical line was filling the left edge of the panel. A quick visit to the service center and within 4 days they replaced the panel with a Full HD Matte Samsung panel that you find on the Asus N55SF. I am more than happy that I got the matte screen and there is not a loss of colors or brightness on the new panel.

Speakers:

Given the specs of this laptop, you will expect a decent set of speakers. But Nope. they are bad.Really Bad. when you run on the stock Realtek drivers the speakers full downright dull. Its when you install the R2.67 Xfi mod drivers and enable Dolby Digital does the speakers actually come to life. I will say they are in NO WAY near the speakers of say a XPS-15 which my roommate has. But they do their job. After the mod drivers I am pretty much satisfied that atleast the quality of sound has gone up by a notch. But in a jist, Speakers are this laptop's truly bad point.

Touchpad:

The touchpad is pure hard rubbber plastic. The buttons on the touchpad are also hard.they do a clear click sound when pressed. The touchpad is sensitive and works well.

Mouse:

Asus has provided a Laser mouse with custom DPI settings.I use the mouse all the time and not the touchpad. The mouse is a full unit and not a strip down either by size or feel. its a 5 button mouse with customization options available. There are 5 DPI settings which are available which you can switch by a click of a button.Couldnt find any particular crib points about this.

Notes:

1.The laptop by default comes with lot of Bloatware.Ill be removing them in the coming times and keeping only those which is essential like Power4Gear and some asus web cam software.

2.The Charger is an actual Brick. Since the pin jack is to the right side and not to the back, it proves sort of a hindarance. My friend who bought the laptop told that the charger added a lot of weight to the carry on luggage.

3.There is one USB 3 port and it performs as said.No problems in that.

4.The button for All lights ON OFF when switched to OFF also switches off the Power Light. to me the power light should be ON whatever choice I make.

5.This Laptop is handling Photoshop way better than I initially thought. It can easily gulp down 20-30layers of Camera RAW where each RAW is of 25mb.( I shoot with a 550D).That is the base and upon which you do further edit. To tell what I am saying, pasting an example below.

6617680789_aed4128491_b.jpg

So a portable editing tool, this laptop scores hard in my books.

6.The laptop has weight.LOTS OF IT.the laptop is almost 4Kgs with the battery. So if somebody thinking to carry this laptop around during the day may need to buy proper shoulder support backpacks for weight distribution.

7.Due to the Design, I will recommend buying a 17inch Bagpack. 15inches will not suffice and the laptop will protude from the dedicated compartment.

For this laptop I bought this.

It keeps the Asus tight and steady.

Thats all from my side.

I did not post any benchmarks or so, since those can be accessed online.

Questions?Comments?Suggestions?

Thanks All.

I bought it from US via Amazon. The unit costed me 1099$ final.

The cooler master U2 cooler and the Wenger Ibex backpack were the additional items that were bought.

The Laptop is covered under 2years Global Warranty. I had in that way no problem while claiming my LCD change at Neoteric.
