Hi Everybody,

I am going to purchase Wifi dongle for my desktop. With the help of this device it want to connect my desktop with my father's laptop who stays on a building just next to my building. I am on a 2nd floor and he is staying on the third. I want to know the configuration process and also want to know how much range a Wifi dongle has??? Purpose of networking is to wirelessly share my Desktop's Airtel broadband connection with my father's lappy.

Regards,

Raheel.

The range usually depends on the quality of the dongle. How much is the distance between the 2 devices? Any obstacles in between?

15m should be manageable I guess, However, keep in mind that the range reduces drastically when there are brick walls in the way. Usually dongles have much lesser range than routers

i will suggest you to buy a WiFi ADSL router/gateway instead of dongle.

pros:-

1.you get better range/coverage.

2.you need not to keep your PC ON all the time just to share the internet.

3.connection drops will be less.

cons:-

you need to spend some more money.

i used the configuration you are planning to do for few months and was a real mess. there were connection drops even when i switch to 5ghz mode.(Adhoc n-mode).

so now i am going to buy a ADSL wifi gateway.

i hope i helped you.

suppose .....the desktop is out due to electricity/other problems.....then your internet will also be down in the meantime.

but if you have a separate internet setup you can run wifi router/gateway on inverter/UPS. and laptop will work on battery

.

and you can use Ethernet cable to connect your desktop PC to internet via ADSL router/gateway.
