ok if u wanna conenct directly u need a cross connection cable get it done by anyone .
plug them turn on the eth ports share the files.
now in cp tcp ip properties set one ip to 172.16.0.1.
put the subnet 255.255.0.0
leave the dns.
do the same in the lap but put ip as 172.16.0.2.
try pinging one from eqach other after restarting. see in network neighbourhood if u can viw the files and share turn off security or simply run a home networking wizard to turn off the security automatically.

is cross connection cable same as the cable u get with adsl modem?

No, thats a patch cable. Though it can work in some cases. But a cross cable is better.
When you plug in the patch cable, does it say "network cable disconnected"? If so, you need a cross cable. If not, then just run XP "New Network" wizard. It did the trick for me.

I think BSNL give multiport router. Does your router have lan connectors at back ?? If yes then how much ??

You will need 2 cables in this case. Rest procedure is what x86 posted..

i think u are talking abt making a bridge btw 2 computers with the cable u got from the modem..(modem to computer connection)
That kind of cable is called Straight Through cables...
rj45straight1.gif
it would be in the same arrangement on both the ends..
This type of cabling is used to connected non similar devices..
etc:modem->computer,comp-->switch ,etc

When u want to connect the similar devices u need CrossOver cables
comp-->comp,hub-->hub,etc

Go to your h/w vendor & get one...;)
FYI. . . the modem--> comp cable cannot to networking ntwing btw 2 pcs..

I had a similar setup to your's before i got the router; anyway,this might be a bit easier for you. you'll need two ethernet cards (if you wanna share internet) one for the dataone modem and one for the other cable connecting your friends laptop. and if you just wanna share files as you say, you unplug the modem cable and use a CAT45 cable to connect the two computers. it will cost abot 90Rs. for a 2-3 meter Dlink cable. hope this helps.
