Storage Solutions New 160gb HDD showing 128gb available space.... help please?

Hello Friends,

I bought Seagate 160gb IDE-HDD 2 months back but due to busy schedule just can't use it. Today after installing it shows 128gb available space only. :S

CHKDSK showing all OK, no bad sectors?

Kindly suggest me what & where the problem is, what to do to get full 160gb space?

Using XP SP2 with P4 - 1.7 GHZ procy.

verify in disk management of xp and it will be all cleared.

also verify in your bios if some settings are in restricted mode for hdds.

install partition magic and get clear in-depth view of your hdd.

It might be a BIOS limitation. IIRC, Seagate had some software to work around such problems but it needs to be installed before using the HDD.

Xp disk management showing

C: 70 gb (62.8 empty)

D: 29gb (fully empty)

E: 28.9 gb (fully empty)

21gb Unallocated

Total= 150.05gb still 9.95gb missing

HDtune Info showing 160gb (149gb)?

Where is missing space?

Wish some one explain in detail?
 
Out of the 160GB you will get a usable space of around 149-150GB only.

The 21GB Unallocated needs to be formatted. You should be able to do it in Disc Management.

Yea.. you never get the mentioned space..

Even in 1 TB drives... you get 930 GB usable..

see its like..

160 GB = 160,000,000,000 bytes... which is advertised.

But in reality

1KB = 1024 bytes.

1 MB = 1024 KB.

1GB = 1024 MB

1TB = 1024GB

So to calculate total usable gigs..

{[(160,000,000,000 /1024 ) /1024 ] /1024} = 149.011 GB
