According to the company's partners, Nvidia plans to launch a cheap version of its GeForce 8-series graphics card, the GeForce 8400, on June 19.

Sources interviewed here at the Computex show said that the card will be available in two versions, one with 256-Mbytes of frame buffer memory, and the other with 128-Mbytes. The memory interface will also be cut down as well, to just a 64-Mbyte memory channel.

The move could help Nvidia further in the discrete desktop graphics market, which it currently controls. According to Jon Peddie Research, Nvidia's market share in discrete desktop GPUs climbed 5.5 percent to 59.3 percent in the first quarter. Nvidia's partners say that AMD's ATI graphics division will have to cut prices to gain back share, a tactic that the GeForce 8400 could cut off at the pass.

The hook, however, will be the price: less than $100, which will bring a cheap form of DirectX 10 compatibility to the masses, the partners said.

Now nvidia is doing madness. This segment should be left to intel (on-board), sis, via etc. After all, any user will have high expectancy on that nvidia's lowest-end card but will be disappointed.

nvidia should be known for its gaming segment cards.

Not necessarily true, most of the OEM's use the low end cards like the 8400 (7100, 6200) etc all $80 and below.

Besides someone looking for a better m/b to OC and stuff but not requiring a high end GPU has nowhere else to go but to the less then $80 (in our case less then Rs. 2500 cards)

do u have a idea how many FX5200 nvidia still sells in india and how much money they are making from them ........ and how do u define "gaming segment card" ........

^^ Well said Rahul, low end gamers are happy that they can get a cheapo card that'll let em play the games with no frills and lowest res possible.

and no. of low end gamers >>> no. of high end gamers

yeah....rahul is point on....i had a talk with a zebby guy recently....says the GF5x00 series is one of their biggest sellers, even to date.....its ahuge market segment.....a sub 100$ card wud be really nice ......maybe mimicking the 6200 and 7300 in the dx10 section

Gr8 nVIDIA on mind games now demoralizing every competitor .. But if these gonna give performance like Onboard then a person buying board with Onboard GPU board then will he/she will consider it?:S

^^ They give better performance then onboard, look at 690G platform, even the latest onboard GPU we have gets beaten by a lowly 6200TC

Badly at that

well we cant say anythinguntil they have launched right ??? let them at least leak sum benchies so we can start arguing ok :D ???? but hey deepak..... it seems i am getting a similar perf with my 6200le and my 6100 onboard and u sayin the 62 beats even the 7 series onboards ??? .... so is the 6200 having probs ??? well wateva......gonna ditch it soon ...

Dunno about the LE version, but have seen loads and loads of benchies and atleast the 6200TC putperforms the onboard stuff by 1.5 to 1.7 times mostly.

gonna ditch it soon ...

Lol.....Can't wait to get your hands on the 8800GTS can you :bleh:

well.....try banging ur head, first with a onboard 6100....then with a 6200le.......only getting FEAR , SCDA, Carbon run smoothly.......man it gets frustrating..coz i owned a 6600V 256, and it was AGP and i had a PCIE slot in my then "new" mobo....then the card got busted and got a replacement of a 6600GT , only that too was an AGP......i have been waiting to get my hands on any GC for the past 1 year......it gets so frustrating that.....chal at least i have enuff hopes my frnd will get me a 8800gts ..will confirm on 16th JUn....if he does ..now there will be a performance jump to be recorded in the Guiness

this aint madness. this is bussiness.

The FX5200 was the largest contributor to nvidia profits, even when websites were trashing the FX series cards and architecture.

Also, 90% of gamers are noobs who think that a 6200LE 512 MB card will pwn all other 256 MB cards in the world.

Noob : "I have a 512 MB graphics card!"

Me : -_-

Why? Cuz they are too stupid to understand pixel pipes, memory interface and clock speeds.

yup........and every1 is at that stage once in his life.....thats y v r on TE aint we?? but let us hope these cards can hold their own in their segment

Surprised to hear that GeF FX series still sells a lot. And seriously most ppl are only concerned with the amount of RAM in their cards. 3 yrs ago i told my frnd to get FX 5200 128 MB RAM. He jst mentioned the 128MB RAM and got a GeF MX4000 frm his PC guy.
