Introduction

OCZ Technologies is a well known manufacturer of computer hardware and has a number of hardware products in its stable.

OCZ is well known in India for their ram and cooling solutions, but they also have a line of power supplies under the OCZ and the PC&P brand. They have also recently started a new line of solid state drives.

Today we are going to have a look at the mainstream OCZ Reaper CL 4 800 Mhz 2X2 GB kit. The kit consists of two modules of 2GB each, which carry a lifetime warranty from OCZ. The heatsinks are made of copper and plastic and give it a very aggressive look. Keep in mind that they are on the larger side and should normally pose a problem when used in combination with large CPU heatsinks.

[BREAK=Performance and Overclock]

For the performance sections lets start with the modules at their stated values namely 800 Mhz, 4-4-4-15, but we will start at 1.95v compared to the 2.15V that is possible for these chips.

We will use everest to benchmark the ram modules in this section.

So to start we have 800 Mhz at 4-4-4-15@1.9v

The ram modules deliver as promised with timings which I would say are standard for 800 Mhz with CL4.

Now we will take a look at the OC potential of this ram.

I tried running it at the same timings as stock, ie 4-4-4-15 @ 1000 Mhz, but as this resulted in boot issues, I reduced the timings to 5-5-5-18. This kept it stable and we tested it with about 2 hours of Prime Blend as well as memtest and found no issues. Take a look below:

AT 1000 Mhz and timings of 5-5-5-18, the results are pretty good.

We tried to go a bit higher, but the best we could manage was 1060 at 6-6-6-21 @ 2.05 volts.

If we look at the figures there is 42% increase in read, a 20% increase in write and a superb 50% increase in the copy speeds compared to stock.

[BREAK=Conclusion]

In conclusion, these are great overclockers for the money and at 3,500-4000/- for a matched 4GB set, they are worth every single paise. I have yet to come across something in this price range which overclocks so easily and beautifully.:hap2:

Pros:

1. Very good price point

2. Overclocks really well

3. Runs very cool with the oversized heatsinks

Cons

1. The heatsinks are pretty large and might come in the way of larger CPU heatsinks.

Nice quick review of one of the legendary exotic rams ;)

Repped

But something is different from what i had. Had exactly the same CL4 rams, but the default latency was 4-4-4-12 and not 4-4-4-15

Are you sure it has 4-4-4-15 as its default latency?

Awh, I always thought these overclocked better than G-Skill Pi Blacks. Guess the Pi Blacks are a better buy with 1100 @ 2.1 CL5 at a lower price.

Also the CL4 standard is 4-4-4-12.

Thanks. Yup they are 4-4-4-15 as per the company website. Checked again.

Gskill Piblacks are another good set of rams. Maybe I will look at gskill in the DDR3 category soon.
