Guys how reliable is the Indian Paypal system?
Thinking of buying something online internationally and payment mode includes paypal, credit/c and others which I don't think are in use here.
Creditcard is the *least* troublesome way to go but I don't have it. Net Safe is one way but they do not accept Net Safe payment mode.
So I thought I'd use Paypal. I asked some friends around but they all hated Paypal. How "bad" is Paypal? Is it not reliable? How long does the transaction take? How does it work? What if there's a error in transaction? Like the money gets deducted but recipient doesn't get it.

And one more Q: has anyone tried Payment by Mobile? It seems to be there in payment mode. My cart amounts to over 2k. I thought that payment by mobile may be a little troublesome because of the huge amount to be paid. How does it work? Will my balance get deducted or?

Share your experiences.

As a buyer, you'll mostly have no problems with Paypal.

To answer your questions,

Paypal is reliable. Most people having issues are sellers i guess.

Transaction is immediate.

I've contacted their customer care only once. They were quick to respond and quite helpful.

Thanks. So I should go for the personal account, right? I don't think i'll be selling anytime soon using paypal as payment method.
One more question, is there any extra charge like service charge, transaction charge etc?
To start using it i just have to create a paypal personal account, link my bank account and immediately start using it? Or do i need to transfer some money to the paypal account?

No Money could not be stored in your Paypal account balance anymore in India. Money would be debited from your credit card directly if you make any transaction.

First verify your PayPal account with entering your bank details then make payment for your purchase with netsafe vcc, This method should work.

But HDFC Netsafe is not functional these days. Is it working for you?

I don't have HDFC Net Safe. A friend also suggested me to use it but its not there in the payment method so i thought it will not work.
I'll try the paypal tomorrow. I have an IOB Visa debit card.

HDFC NetSafe (VCC) is down for maintenance right now. You will require Indian CC (any Visa/mastercard) to attach it with your Paypal ID.

- Once you register your CC with PayPal, They will charge some 1 USD to verify it. Means, you will need to provide your correct address in your PayPal profile, with which the transaction will get verified. Your CC details and your personal details.
- Once it's registered and verified, the amount will be refunded by PayPal.
- You will also need to add your working bank account in your PayPal profile. And you will also need to provide your PAN number to them. Do not know whether PAN number is still mandatory or not, but it was when I started using it in 2009.

- PayPal will not disclose your CC details to seller. It will only pass your name and address (If shipping is included).
- PayPal buyer protection deadline is 45 days from the date of transaction. IF any unwanted stuff happens, like eBay seller do not send your things in timely manner, or anything, you can raise an issue as well.

- A friendly advice, If purchasing from eBay, only use PayPal. If purchasing from Amazon, use CC directly without any fear. (They do not have PayPal :p) If purchasing from a site where PayPal is there as one of the payment methods, strongly use it. Though PayPal fees will increase your total cost by some 2.5-3.5% (Less may be), but it's secure and hassle free.

@crossbow thanks for the explanation. Can i use paypal with a debit card? I dont have a c/c.

Can you tell me more about this? "Though PayPal fees will increase your total cost by some 2.5-3.5%". Extra charge for every payment made?
I'll reveal everything later. :P

Most of the debit cards don't work there. I have tried some Master, Visa and Maestro debit cards from different banks but none of them work there.

Suppose your amount is 100usd if you calculate 1$ at Rs55 Rs 5500 + Add 3.5% as Currency Conversation charges by Bank = Rs192.50 + 12.36% Service Tax =23.79

Rs 5716.29 Total amount charged

Try icici bank debit card it mostly works with paypal these days

That fee will be there whether you pay directly or using PayPal. In fact PayPal's currency conversion fee is less by 1 % or so.[DOUBLEPOST=1368814975][/DOUBLEPOST]
Yeah you can. As long as it is not Maestro card

Not all debit cards work even if its Visa/MasterCard. AFAIK only Axis/ICICI/Indian Bank debit cards work.

I feel HDFC conversion is less then PayPal, Yesterday conversion by paypal was 57.13 for 1$. Where as at the same time was charges .25 paisa less by HDFC.

Just wait for a day or two. The SMS you get from the bank at the time of the purchase does not include the charges, it will be posted in your statement as a separate entry.

I knw that mate this not the first time i had used the paypal aslo i said .25 paise difference and not Rs.2/2.25 difference, If u use paypal conversion method then Paypal debits the card with total amount as they use their own conversion and if u use bank conversion then the card is debited with the current $ price and then later on the u get the conversion charges on the card.

@karankapoor : It keeps varying I suppose. Cause today's PayPal rate is 57.144 and Visa rate is 57.1598 including all charges.

Secondly, in case of a refund, if you were charged in USD, you wouldn't get the full amount refunded, as the exchange rate applied for refunds will be much less. Whereas if you had chosen PayPal's conversion option, then you will get the exact amount that you paid even if the refund is done after a month.

Yes obviously there is a difference and almost cases, PayPal's rate was lesser than Visa's rate in my experience, plus the benefit of full refunds. So it makes PayPal conversion a better choice for me.
