Ok so i just got my new XFX 8800gts....

My cab has got 3 fans and id like to think that the cooling works well. Atitool is showing a temp of upto ~85* C on the card when overclocking the card to 560/850 [stock clocks are 513/792].

What temp is it safe to overclock to and would it shorten the life of my gfx if i did?

Also does anyone know where the clock settings are stored once saved?

initially, i was stupid enough to oclock directly to 600/900 and my pc just went off. Then when i tried to restart it wouldnt come on[and my heart sank to my knees]. I then removed the cmos batt and tried again.....came on!...so i presume that the settings are stored in the bios?

inputs appreciated...as always!

85 degrees is way too high man ... I get 65 degrees after an hour of oblivion and 56 idle at 80% fan speed in vista ... what software are you using to oc and which psu ?

Hey thanks for the info.....I am using atitool and a zebronics 500w psu.

My pc has 3 colling fans+1psu fan

i havent tried obvil. yet ...but what temp does your card go upto when doing a test using atitool?

85C is way too high as quoted in one of the above posts

Stock should be around 50-55C and full load at about 65C, for 37-38C room temperature

I think the reason for such huge temperature is due to fan duty cycle being at 60% or below or the fan is malfunctioning

Increase fan duty cycle to 90% using Rivatuner

The Guru of 3D Download Section

Read the fan speed guide using Rivatuner in guru3d forum posts and try it

PS: At high high temp, the card could be fried
So take care, and underclock it

Check some overclocking guide, and then do it

Overclocking voids warranty and a burnt card will not be replaced, if the service personnel find that its overclocked

hmmm I have an evga 8800 gts 320mb superclocked, clocked @ 678/978 my temps never go above 65c, but I have my fan temps regulated by Riva. It may also be related to manufacturer as well.

I havn't tried ati tool since it doesn't work on vista, but using rthdribl for an hour I get temps upto 63-64 ... you could increase the fan speed using rivatuner and check if it helps or try some innovative cooling techniques like Eazy did and have a 92mm fan blowing air over the card and another one sucking air out through the back or side panels ... he had posted some pics but seems like they got deleted I'm using a similar setup currently ... hope it helps
