Storage Solutions Password Protect hard Disk

Hi Guys!
I'm Looking for a practical method to password protect an entire external hdd...

the requisites are..
1. Better to use without any software..
2. need to use the hdd in multiple pcs..
3. Should not lockup if i format my pc (relates to No 2)
4. Windows xp & 7 Compatible..

Once I made encrypted(windows default encrypt option) folders on Windows but unable to recover when OS changed.....
