Philips SHE9800 Review

I bought this today.
I was planning to do the review, but I think touzeen has done a very good job. what started out as a small post grew long, so I decided to thread this.

These usually sell for something close to 2000. Touzeen in his review has purchased it for rs 1990 however I bought this on an impusle at Croma for rs 2450 . That's nearly 500 rs extra however I dont care, as you would later learn.

The box, quite solid, hard and puts a very good impression of the end product. Sets you up for the experience well.

Now the back

Explains a bit about the work that has gone in these earphones and a bit about Sound stage.

The tease...

and finally the unveiling..

Right, lets head on to the actual review.

Build quality: very good feel. wires seem sturdy enough. Better than the EP 630. The stereo jack and the encapsulating rubber have a very sturdy, solid, metal feel.

How is it on the ears?
Needless to say, they sound very good. when I say good, I mean excellent and wow. Yeah, I was literally blown by the quality these offered. The litteral feel of music was very different. The sound was flowing like a thick viscous fluid around my ears. At-least that's how it felt.

So now, you know these are good, but are these worth the 2 grand that you will have to sacrifice for these babies?

I did a small comparison with my existing EP630.
First I started off with entire tracks or samples on my 5.5 gen ipod. All songs were of 320 kbps bitrate. The tracks I used were, Michael Jackson - Thriller, Eagles - Hotel California, Led Zepplin - Stairway to Heaven, Delhi 6 - Genda Phool, Atif Aslam - Kuchh Is Tarah.

Soundstage here makes all the difference. Tremendous amounts of it. It sounds so good that you almost feel that these earphones are cheating you somehow. With some kinda tech, sound alteration ? (hahaha) However for whatever it does, it is most surely ear pleasing.

Then later I started off with specific sampling of tracks one ear at a time. I did only one test however that was enough for me to convince me of the pro's of it. The sample was Thriller ( In the King's honour )

If you would play and see, before the lyrics begin you can hear the wolves howling. The wolves howl one ear at a time.
Now the wolf on the ep630( left ear) sounded flat and bassy ( drowned even ), the same thing on the philips sounded firstly elavated, much much sharper. Its not shrill as it is clear. This applies to the other parts of the music as well.

The difference I would say is that the EP 630 gives a sense of a fuller sound. However the Philips gives much more attention to the details. I think this comes at the cost of its mids. Not to say they are bad, just not as strong. On some songs I feel that the highs are a particularly razor sharp. Overall, it doesn't interfere with the magic.

I would like to bring across the point that I belive the IEM quality is quite subjective and probably not many people would see eye to eye.

However I would like to give the Philips SHE 9800 a two thumbs up for such brilliant quality. While I dont have anything else in its price range to compare it againts, I have no qualms recommending it for anyone who is looking for a step up. For the price I have paid, I dont mind, nor do I think you will.

My friend has it; its pretty good and I guess the shape helps in getting the advantages of a both normal earphones and an iem. I felt that the treble was a bit high though. Anyone have any idea how these compare to the RE2s.
