Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Explodes Into Flames on Video, Company Responds...

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Xiaomi has reportedly issued a replacement to the customer
  • Xiaomi told Gadgets 360 it is investigating the incident
  • The smartphone was damaged substantially in the explosion
It seems Xiaomi is going the Samsung Galaxy S7 way or is it just a random incident.

In an event that might remind some people of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone was seen catching fire in a video inside a shop in Bengaluru. While a shopkeeper was seen trying to insert the SIM into a customer's Redmi Note 4, it caught fire after an explosion and burned the handset's entire body substantially.

In a video shared by The Explode, it can be seen that the customer's Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was not connected to a charger or any other accessory and simply burst into flames while the retailer was handling the smartphone. As most of such cases are usually associated with overheating of the handset while charging or otherwise, this seems to be a rather rare case.

Gadgets 360 got in touch with Xiaomi India about this incident, the company responded by saying, "At Xiaomi, customer safety is of utmost importance to us. We have reached out to the customer to investigate this matter, and are awaiting further response." As per Tech Case, which initially reported the incident, the customer has since received a replacement for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 from the company.

Thankfully nobody got injured in this incident but clearly by a very narrow margin. If the phone would have caught fire while someone was over a call, there was every possible chance that it could have caused serious injury. As consumer safety is something that has previously created huge problems even for big players like Samsung, Xiaomi might have to make a strong statement regarding the matter eventually. Having said that, this is currently an isolated incident and doesn't necessarily imply an inherent problem with the handset...

Decide for yourself.

What's there to decide?

To my knowledge, this has happened with nearly all major smartphone players.

And, I thought that for posting in the Technology News thread, some original writeup is needed, not a copy paste from the NDTV page.
Did it happen with Lenovo or Motorola?
Is it happening with cheap Chinese ripoffs sold for cheaper prices.

Samsung Galaxy S7 is an exception here.

I think I said nearly. When you look at phones by volume, then you get a different picture. And what's not to say its not a gimmick?

And secondly, its Galaxy Note 7, not S7.

^ lol. NDTV and other sites like TOI, mid-day all had the anti adblock JavaScript in their pages. Seems like viewership fell and they removed it quietly.

Even if they've removed the adblocking now, i've maintained my practice of opening news sites in a web proxy. Blocks their annoying autoplay videos as well.

This shows how much fake news is spread on social media nowadays. Everyday, I see so many useless and fake news being spread on social media, and innocent people believe it, and forward it to their known ones too. It is a sad state of the present world really.

True. Roadside charger are not even certified and wires are bound to give up due to poor materials.

Aukey is too fragile in my opinion. Anker is lasting for 3 yrs but aukey has given up in less than 6 months.

One of the wires, yes. I am considering Anker as well.

Yes, Samsung, Apple, Lenovo, Motorola, Nokia and whatever brand that you can think of.
Same for laptops as well. It has happened to Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo etc. Any gadget that uses these Lithium based rechargeable batteries is susceptible to this if the battery gets ruptured for whatever reason. Mere exposure to air is enough for lithium to react violently. It also reacts with water. So you cannot put out the flame with water either.

In a bizarre incident, a RedMi Note 4 smartphone exploded in the pocket of a user in Ravulapalem in East Godavari district on Sunday.

The owner of the mobile phone Bhavana Suryakiran sustained a serious injury on his thigh. The the phone caught fire when he was driving his bike from home to his shop with his smartphone in the pocket of his pants. It could not be pulled out as it was burning. Locals came to his rescue, poured water on his pants before they were able to pull it out. However, the phone was still on fire even after they threw it out.

Suryakiran said he bought the phone only 20 days back through Flipkart and he will sue the company over the defective piece as well as for compensation for his injuries.
