Well i upgraded to galaxy Nexus three months back after using S1 for like 1.5 years. And believe me S1 is very slow as compared to this dual core 1 gb ram phone. I still have s1 with me which I use to listen to music coz it has voodoo sound implementation which is nonexistent in galaxy Nexus.

As far as your upgrade is concerned you should first tell us about your budget

Root it, put Cyanogen MOD. Realize how much performance is held back by the stock ROM.

I am telling you this because my sister was gifted such a phone and performance is great for day-to-day tasks, haven't gamed OR done anything intensive on it yet so cannot comment on same.

Well, if you are coming from 2 year old SGS1 even SGS2 will make you happy again.
For your kind information, i juz want to tell you dat your SGS1 is having 1 of d best dac available in mobile phones yet...
SGS1 is one of d best phone to make a portable rig...:)
