Hi all,

i am thinking of investing more on GPU than CPU+MOBO and go for some changes:

CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640(if it's available) or AMD Athlon II X4 635

MOBO: gigabyte GA78GMT-USB3

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4870

Please suggest if corsair VX 450 is sufficient to handle this rig and suggest any changes if possible to get it under budget. I forgot to mention but there is a monitor to be bought within the budget and i'm thinking of LG 17" - 177WSB / DELL 18.5" - 1910 IN. Please comment on this as well.

Thanks in advance :D

The HD4870 is EOL long back, so consider the HD5770. Its wise to go for a ~5.5k board as u have decided rather than a 10k mobo that u decided initially.

Components Description Price (INR)

Processor AMD AthlonII X4 635 5000

Motherboard Gigabyte GA-785GMT-USB3/ MSI 880GMA-E45 5700

RAM 4GB(2*2) Corsair Value/Kingston DDRIII 4600

HDD 1TB Seagate 7200.12 3200

GPU Sapphire HD5770 1GB GDDR5 9000

Monitor Samsung B2030 6600

Cabinet CM Elite 310 1600

PSU/SMPS Corsair VX 450 3700

Key Board Logitech MMKB+Optical combo 650

Mouse NA -

ODD Sony/Samsung OEM SATA DVD-Writer 950

Total 41000

This is good gaming setup for ~40k. You do not need a 3rd party cooler unless u plan to O.C ur PC significantly. For light OC and stock speeds the stock cooler will suffice.

The VX450 can easily handle this rig and couple more upgrades as HD5770 consumes only ~110w max.

Thanks for the prompt reply DarkAngel. As you suggested, i'm thinking of dropping the 3rd party CPU cooler as well to get in some budget for the GPU. I would like to know how the MSI mobo is as i've not had the opportunity to buy an MSI mobo. Thanks again :)

Hi Darkangel,

I guess as i'm a newbie in this forum, it'd take sometime before the mods approve of my post of thanks :D. I would also like to ask if you or someone else can guide me to a shop in CTC Hyderabad, where i can get some reasonable deals for the above config, as from the location, I see that you are currently based in TN.

5770 at 9k doesn't make sense when gtx 460 is just 1.5k more and significantly better performance .

If going for 5770, Choose the CX400 etc instead of the VX450.
GTX 460 + VX450 = performance advantage
HD 5770 + CX400 = price advantage (~2.5k)

Headroom will be mostly irrelevant, even the most efficient meaningful upgrade beyond this GPU tier (i.e. 5850 etc) would be pushing it a bit on a VX450 (VX550 would be just right).
Also consider the X2 555 BE in lieu of the X4 635.
Sweet config. overall, TS cannot go wrong with it :) .

I guess i got to go with HD 5770 + CX 400 coz of the price advantage. As for the X2 555 BE, my brother wants a quad core proc as he's not likely to upgrade for at least 2-3 years if not longer :). i'll also take a look at GT 460 and see if i can fit it in the budget. Thank you for the advice :D

You just get Palt cards for 10,750 with 2 yrs warranty and then the POV cards for 11k. The MSI Cyclone 768MB costs ~11.7k. SO there is a significant price gap.

As Amien says the CX400 would suffice for the config i suggested. Just that u had the budget the VX450 would give u 2 yrs extra warranty.

The 555BE is for ppl willing to gamble. There is arnd 80% chance that it unlocks to a quad. It may not do so too.

@Amien: The HD5850 and the GTX460 has similar power consumptions. Then how come the GTX460 is fine with a VX450 whereas the HD5850 is not :S

Thanks for the insight Amien and DarkAngel. I am going for 5770 both for its price and power consumption as well. As for the PSU, i've asked my bro to see what he feels about the budget. :D

Because the GTX 460 loses more of its competitive edge if it has to be coupled with an even more expensive/powerful PSU. Basically, the VX450 will power an HD5850 fine, its just that at that tier of performance the additional headroom comes at a nominal cost(~1k) in relation to the GPU+PSU price(15k+~3k/~4k).

@ Dark Angel, Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H is available now for 5200rs. I bought it for a friend last week. Also AMD 955 BE is down to 7450/7550rs from 8000rs.

I would suggest the following:-

AMD 955 BE-7500rs

Motherboard-MSI 785-E45--rs.4500 (there is no difference between 785/880-infact the 785 is faster overall by 1-3% in everything and as long as you are using discrete graphics it doesn't matter)

Corsair XMS 3 1600 2x2=4gb/Gskill rip jaws 1600mhz 4gb=5300

Cabinet-CM Elite 310 will be too small to handle the larger gpus--I suggest Gigabyte Luxo X 142/M 1000/M 1004 cabinets ---1500rs.

Gigabyte 460W psu-2200rs.

Nvidia GTX 460 -11000rs

Sony Dru 870 Retail pack--1100

Hdd-Seagate 1Tb--rs.3200

Gigabyte GM 6800--rs.700(inclusive of shipping)

Keyboard-Logitech/Microsoft/Hp/Philips/Benq=300rs

Acer 22.5 inch lcd(1600x900)---rs.7500

TOTAL-- 44800-45000.

The above config should last you for quite some time. Also getting a better lcd compared to 19/20 inchers makes more sense because at these resolutions you will hardly tax your GPU. Gaming at lower resolutions is more cpu intensive. Its worth the extra 5k.

+1 for darkangel's config,
but real world pricing with vat should come around 43k
i enquired about the same rig in market
Corsair Rams @4.6k is too less, it is 4.9-4.8k without tax

@op why no ups?
if you want ups APC 650 VA @3k would be good
and you'd need 2x120mm fans too(front intake , side intake)
to keep the setup well ventilated

it is not like op has budget to go for anything over HD5770 or GTX460 now!
if op wants to upgrade to better cards in 2 years or so,
there will still be plenty of cards which can fit in CM 310
GPU size shrinks every year or so
(2 years from now gpu comparable to 5970 will have size of 5770, that's the trend)

i think CM310 is good enough for his budget
else NZXT Gamma or higher

Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. My brother got DarkAngel's config(went for gigabyte 880GM-USB3 as he could not find MSI's 880 one) from CTC yesterday, though he could not find VX450 PSU there. I had to order it online and hopefully it'll reach him in a day or 2. The whole thing cost around 42K.
