well, if mobility is not a concern then western digital mybook essential 1 TB or seagate free agent 1 tb would be good choices. both of them will require a external power supply and come in 3.5 inch form factor. both are priced at 5-5.5k. wd has a three year warranty for external disks, seagate five years(btw, keep in mind that seagate also sell hdd with 2 year warranty which are by cheaper by about 400 bucks). i prefer seagate for the five year warranty but many people would rather avoid it due to the issues plaguing them.

else if mobility is major concern. then opt for the 2.5 inch seagate freeagent go/wd passport. cost about 5 k for 500 gb. no external power supply is required.

as for where to buy it from, i would any day suggest ebay over any other options if you have a ebay account and get discount coupons in it. 10% discount on ebay will give you a far better prices. I recently got a 1 tb external seagate with 5 year warranty for about 4700 shipped.

Moility is not the major concern. I will check 2.5 seagate/WD HDD.
BTW which is the good in terms of reliability and do we have more GB HDD in 2.5

well, a you never know when a hard disk will fail. in general, the last few months have seen pretty many failures in seagate, making most people feel safer with wd, but you cannot bet on that. you might just end up with the 1 in 1000 or watever the failure ratio is of WD too.

there are 1 tb 2.5 inch disks now at least in US, but here am not too sure.

i'm also looking for a external HDD.

i'm interested in this 1TB - Western Digital My Book Home Edition WDH1CS10000

it's got - Interface -> IEEE 1394 (FireWire), Hi-Speed USB, eSATA-300.
Western Digital WDH1CS10000 specs

around 6.5k. is it good buy?

btw, can a ext. HDD used to sync with two computers, i mean maintain two different profiles?

thanks for the replies, i am thinking to go for 500gb 2.5 external HDD as it doesnt require external power source. Please help me deciding between seagate and WD, which is the best in terms of speed, data transfer.

^ I also want to choose b/w external 500gb 2.5" seagate vs WD. But my criteria is reliability. Which is best in terms of reliability?

After searching a lot decided to go for Seagate Freeagent Go 2.5 500GB. It costs me 5200 here from DCC in pune. I have seen some good deals on ebay and it costs me 5100 plus shiping charges. I got a max 500 Rs coupon from ebay. I am coming to mumbai on saturday, can i get a cheaper deal than this in mumbai. Anyone from mumbai, please tell me so that i can decide the cheap option here.:D

^Both Seagate and WD will eventually fail at some point of time. Just making sure to regularly re-arrange the data, and "removing safely" will decrease the probability of this happening. My Seagate Freeagent Go 2.5 500GB went kaput after about nine months, but I used it really horribly.

Ok i will consider this point, but can anyone from mumbai tell me where can i get good deal for portable HDD. (Shop will remain open on sunday)

Check baba on Tilak road. They are offering the same for Rs.4900. Few days ago my friend purchased from them. DCC is quite costly these days unlike earlier :(
