Hey guys, im heading to singapore next week and i was thinking, is it possible to get a LCD TV from there? I mean how to transport it, is it safe to check it in with regular baggage?

Checked prices online and 32" LCD's are available for 500 SGD upwards which translates to roughly 17k. Is it worth it getting an LCD TV from sg? Was looking at a 32" tv

Thanks in advance :D

my friend went to vietnam and got himself a 32 inch samsung tv for 15k. when he told me about it i let loose a string of expletives and cursed him for not telling me earlier so that i could've got myself the same tv.

the bast**d didnt have to pay duty at the airport.

^^Not a problem so long as the baggage is handled well. If possible, have the dealer do some additional heavy-duty packaging using wood so as to ensure a safe transit.

Have the bill declared under 25000 INR (~700 SGD) whatever TV you may finally end up buying. :D

No need for any extra packing. People just get even 50+inch TVs right in the box to the plane and back :P

As long as your TV value is below 700SGD and carry no other electronic stuff, you're safe :D

Yes. I personally saw the customs arsew*pes fleecing a guy who had brought a 32incher before they fleeced me :( 50incher you'll be straightaway be caught.

@sunnyboi - If I get a LCD legally from sgp with a valid bill, how much customs will I have to pay, do you have any idea?

They'll have a fair idea how much a similar or perhaps the very same model costs here and charge you in excess! Else they'd look up the model in the net and find the prices - these guys are smart!

The fairly easier way to evade them is to pay them some amount instead as a token of affection.

I actually saw a family waling out with 2 big 50 incher LCD's with Home theater.. I dont know how they got it throught... btw they were coming from London

^ It's 25,000 per person .So incase it was a big family they can divide the total among members of the family and evade the Duty.

Once while returning from Singapore ,we had bought a O-General Split AV , a 29" TV and some other random electronic stuff. Got through without paying duty ;).

Having good communication skills , prior experiences and contacts helps as well. If you at the counter looking scared they will surely try to extract maximum duty from you . You need to be smart and confident while speaking to these guys !

Ofcourse if you ran out of luck completely ,no one can help you :P.

Thats the thing, i have no idea how the baggage handlers will handle it. Might be a risk so was thinking of either packing it very well or carrying it as hand baggage. Yea was looking at something under 600 SGD anyway. Thanks :)

People carried it as hand baggage? I was actually thinking of doing that but wasnt sure if i could. Yea it should be below 700 SGD and besides my brother is also travelling with me, so between the two of us we definitely wont be carrying stuff worth more than 1000 SGD.

Legally you're allowed to get Rs. 25000 worth of stuff without paying any customs. As for the customs duty on TV's i have no idea

and btw, where did you check the prices?

Checked it on hardwarezone forums The House of Displays - www.hardwarezone.com.sg

question you need to ask is if its really worth buying it there and getting it down, espesically since you are looking at a 32" screen

i guess the prices for 32" TVs are in 20s right now, so grey market prices would be cheaper still

howmuch would a 42"/46"or47" cost in grey in India as compared to it in SG?

^ where is the price for a good 32 incher in 20's , those are not full HD i guess , u are basically talking abt the lower range of videocon , philips or sharp tv in and around 24-25k if i am right

^well for eg the sony 32" BX300 costs about 19k* in SG vs 24k in the grey market.
the 40" BX400 costs 40k* in SG vs 44k in the grey market.

*BTW sg prices are the sony recommended sale prices.

Goes for 30k here

Can't find a quote for that one..

So it looks like you get a third off the price. That's roughly how much import duty is.

If the initial cost is much, the trip would pay for itself.

But you got that transport risk in the hold to worry about. All it takes is one drop and there goes everything :(

yeah thats what i mean, unless you are saving significantly over grey prices, then you can get it from there, otherwise, get it locally and save your self all the hassles

if you wanna risk it, get a 50" TV for around 45k, that way ure saving close to 40k or maybe more, which will make all the hassles worth it :P

in bangalore atleast we don't find the street prices as good as CI price.
its only going to get expensive next month thanks to the increase in VAT.

even the lcds that u buy in the grey market comes in flight,in bangalore the lcds come from TH or SG or MY to chennai and then by a overnight train to bangalore, they are packed quite well, chances of lcd getting damaged is low.

Thing is those would be packed in crates and well padded. Here its every man for himself.

Having said that, i've known ppl to bring corel plates over from the US in their suitcases, the key there was to make sure nothing could move and was well padded all would be good.

With a TV the unit is in a box not in a suitcase so it would need to be packed well. I doubt the box it comes in is sufficient. Thats only good for being transported in a container from the manufacturer and that too sitting on palets
