Hi guys.. please help me out on this..

This is what happened.. i was playing need for speed.. suddenly the power went out, the computer switched to the UPS(APC 650W).. in about 5 mins I shut down the PC.. the power comes back after 10 mins.. i switch on the PC and the computer says Disk Boot Failure.. :(

I have two HDD's, a 500GB Sata and a 80 GB IDE.. Windows Xp is installed on the 500GB Sata.. the second 80GB hard disk is detected in BIOS along with the DVD Writer..

So what's up with the 500GB Sata?? What do i do next?

Incase any other details are required, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

try switching to another sata on mobo and also try with different sata data+power cable.

you can also try the 500gb with an usb enclosure and check if it gets detected.

The HDD might be dead due to power surge
Try the HDD on the other ports with the sata+power cable of the 80GB HDD

Tried the above methods but it still doesn't work.. went to nehru place to get it checked.. confirmed by them its dead :(

So now how do I recover all that data? How much do those data recovery guys at Nehru Place charge roughly?

Thanks!

Yeah it was strange indeed..

I think it has more to do with because it was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard disc series which from what I have read/heard is known for corrupting/crashing.

Yes it is the *famed* 7200.11 series.. from what I have read the firmware cannot be updated if BIOS does not recognize the disk.. correct me if I am wrong..

I have been searching the net for ways to recover the data.. i found this Un-bricking Seagate Drives.. any of u guys used this method? can all the parts/things be procured from nehru place in delhi?

Thanks!

I think for accessing the HDD for any kind of working (read/write/flashing firmware), first of all the hdd must be detected in the BIOS

I believe that in the case of 7200.11, in some cases the HDD is not detected in BIOS but the firmware can still be updated. There is also some DIY stuff on net about this.

I suggest that you check the symptoms and the firmware version also as it only affects some firmware versions.
