Hi friends
I bought new DVD Writer - Samsung SH-S223C/IDDS for my sister's system.. She has CD Writer which is IDE and HDD which is also IDE..
The DVD writer is SATA one and i connected it to one of SATA ports on motherboard.

The problem is DVD writer can't read any DVD or CD. when i insert DVD/CD into the drive, there is blinking for 3 -4 sec then it disappears and CD/DVD remains idle in writer. What could be the problem?

The bios has following SATA options

On chip sata [ enable/disable ] - i enabled it

On chip Sata Class ID [ enabled as RAID/enabled as IDE]

Sata hotplug support [ enabled/disabled]
Thanks in advance :)

Check it in some other PC... If its not working there as well then you need to get it replaced if bought only within last few days...

^ i bought it today, i will give it back tomorrow, and will ask shop wala to test it. but i'd like to know is the problem because it is SATA?, as her two drives are of IDE ones..

There are some issues with current Samsung writers... Even LG is also plagued by quality issues...

If you can, then get HP DVD Writer... Its Lite-ON OEM... Much better than LG & Samsung...

Have you tried changing the SATA port ? But that should not be a problem IMO, its the drive's fault. Get it replaced.

Yes i tried it on other sata port but no luck. :(

DVD writer that i bought wasn't in box, it was in simple plain polythene with manufacturer label(model no, date of manufacture etc) stickied to it. i asked dealer about packaging he said all samsung and LG writers nowadays doesn't come in box..is it true? There was HP DVD Writer @ 1.4k available and this one was in proper box..

I'd also like to know, if i get IDE drive instead of SATA one, will it perform lower than SATA one.. What is the advantage of SATA over IDE? :P

Most of the LG DVD writers that come without a box these days.

Even though Sata is faster than IDE - the lens in the DVD writer remains the same. Hence any performance gain is going to be minimal.

If you have spare IDE ports I would recommend going for the IDE drive.

Those that don't come with boxes are simply OEM drives (Correct me if I am wrong). At my place there are Samsung DVD RWs available in proper boxes and packing. And regarding performance of SATA and IDE drives, there is no performance difference, the only thing is that you can use a SATA wire, which is more compact as compared to IDE drives. And compact wires are good for proper air flow. I would always recommend anyone SATA drives, if their motherboard supports it.

SATA has no performance advantage over IDE. So you can get IDE if you like or buy SATA, but you should also see if your mobo has native support for SATA drives. Some older mobo's don't.

That HP box writer is the one I am recommending in lieu of your Samsung.... Even if your writer is not bad, it would be recommended to stay away from Samsung...

Which OS are u using? Is the DVDRW recognised by the OS?

If u cant see the dvd drive in the OS....change the on chip sata mode to ide in the bios...

She has Win XP + SP2.. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA8TRS350MT bought in 2005.. i did enable sata with IDE, though OS finds new hardware as IDE device but i cant see any Dvd drive icon in My computer.. I even checked device manager, it isnt recognizd there aswell..:(

i'll get it back to shop and test it there..

do u have a sata to USB connector that is generally used for converting internal HDD's to external drives.

if u have it then u should try connecting using the usb port and see if it works,

Did u try any other sata DVD rom's probably from one of ur friends?

Lastly:), what power supply do u have? I had a liteon DVD writer which used to not read most of the dvds till i changes my power supply

plz do chck the psu...i had exact similar problem with my brand new 2 sata/ide lg & samsung dvd writers..& was totally confused when the same drives worked flawlessly in another system...then i got a new high powered corsair psu...& now all that is history..so essential recommendation...do check the psu & try the ODs in a different better powered system...to root out the real problem causing the issue

i went to shop and the damn writer worked there. I think SATA controller on mobo is faulty. I asked him to replace it with IDE, he will give me IDE aftr day after tomorrow..

Back to home, i disconnectd CD writer and connectd same writer again still no luck. This time i can see DVD drive icon in my comp.

When i insert CD or DVD into drive, it does rotate then stops. I hold Writer in hand, and felt CD still revolving slowly for half minute or so then it stop.. What could be the problem?

Have you installed SATA Controller driver... I am not able to find out your mobo model.. Please reconfirm again...
