I have just setup a linksys WRT54G wireless-G router. It works fine within 20 ft. But there's no signal at all beyond that... I changed the frequency channel to 11. But nothing seems to work....

Please be more specific... where have you used it?? did you try it on different comps or took your comp over a 20 feet radius.. as a temp solution you might try connecting it the 4 RJ45 ports it has at its back.. Some reviews also suggest that that particular router has low range.. checks specs..welcome to >>TE<<

I used two different laptops! There are actually two houses in the same compound... I have placed the router in the house where the BSNL telephone is kept. There's no signal in the other house.

if its an older ( V4 or older) you might be able to flash it with a modded firmware and get better range. But 20 ft is pretty much the usable range, especially if walls are involved. I use a WRT54G , and a WMP54g PCI WiFi card ( with antenna) . it gets 18% strength across 10ft, (which includes a wall and a floor btw ) I suppose the sensitivity of the laptops antenna is lesser

changing the frequency channel will ony alleviate interference problem with any other wireless devices, if any...but it wont improve the range if the amount of obstruction is considerable...try placing your router in sucha location so that distance to diff locations wherein you access the net is the same...find out if you get range beyond 20feet in an open area aswell if possible...

Same probs here. In fact the netgear router had a much stronger signal. Should I zap it with Tomato and boost the signal. My version is .7 Any other ideas guys. Just a bit wary about using tomato.....not great with this stuff;so if things get screwed can it be undone....thnx

my linksys works well in my bungalow where i have placed it on the upper floor and i get decent (20%) signal strength on the lower floor and am able to browse/download thru my BSNL 256kbps link just fine...

check my wireless advanced settings screenshot and compare it with yours to see if they can be tweaked...

I checked it out... Its the default setting. I had called up the customer care and he asked me to change the beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS thresholds to 2304... I changed the location of the router. But I still don't find any improvement.... :(

What is the hardware version of your router?? The version 7 and 8 units had some issues with range which were taken care of with some newer firmware updates. So make sure that you're running the latest firmware from the Linksys site.

Yeah its the latest firmware version 8.00.2

my wifi receiver is a tablet, i think my firmware is v7 but hardware is v8... maybe the OP's premises has too many metallic grills or even metallic bits in the concrete which can block range of radio signals...

oh i just read the second post.. there are TWO houses and other one does not get signal... i am in a single house with lower and upper floor...

maybe my wifi signal bounces around inside the walls :)

you can try placing your linksys near a window which is open and facing the other house and in the other house place your laptops near an open window which can see the window of the first house? :)

Generally, keep the router as high as possible, like on a cupboard or something. Of course, keeping it on a metal cupboard or anything metal would hamper the signal quite a bit. A wooden cupboard or something like that would be ideal.

Actually, I'd not recommend a WRE54G. It effectively cuts down your speed in half. It's fine if all you're doing is surfing the net, but if you access data across the local network a lot, a WAP54G in repeater mode would be much faster.

Short of getting a new router you could try a more powerful 7dbi plus antenna to increase range, but difficult to get hold of in India. Gupataji has some Rosewill antennas, maybe he could help.

Alternatively you could try this easy to make homemade parabolic with cardboard and foil antenna. Apparently its 8-12dbi. Visit freeantennas.com, here's the link:

Failing that I would suggest you get the highly regarded Buffalo HP G54 or G54S model. It would be a good idea to try and see if it works first before buying if have friends with the same model you can borrow from.
