Laptops Problem with old HP ze1250

Forerunner
I have an old HP ZE1250 - Athlon 1800+ with 512mb ram

I have stopped using it for over an year, but would like to put it into some use if im able to make it a bit reliable.

Problem -

1.

When I switch on the notebook it shutsdown in middle of bootup process. Sometimes right after bios check or while windows is booting. I can hear the HDD screeching to a halt and display goes off. But I can open the cd drive and sometimes the drive (optical) will be spinning.

If I keep the notebook in this state for 10-15minutes, switch it off and power it on again, it starts up as if everything is fine.

2.

And one more thing is, quite a few times the hdd slows to a snails pace. It takes 20+ minutes to boot up and will be too slow to do anything. other times it works just fine.

My tries at fixing this -

Initially I thought that the HDD(Hitachi travelstar 30gb 4200rpm) was bad and also got a new WD disk. But I have the same set of problems with the new disk too.

I guess that the problem might be with the IDE part of mobo but not sure.

Any suggestions on what I could do with it would be helpful. I dont want to spend too much on a 6+ year old notebook but am ok with anything else as I dont have anything to loose.

TIA

Did you reinstall windows after getting the other HDD? Sounds like a windows prob to me

ya, I did. The lappy comes with xp home edition disks. Im not sure if its OS related but can try a linux distro too. Actually I will try that and post back.

Update:

Installed Fedora 8 and made sure things were running properly. Since the problem is when I start the notebook after a day or so - I switched it off and let it cool down for around an hour. Just started it again and it conked during the init process. So mostly the problem is hardware related.
