im visiting hong kong next week .... plan to buy a laptop & either 8800gts 640 mb or 2900xt.....

which psu is required for these card??plz suggest for mumbai....

which out of the two cards do you recommend??

anyone who has bought anything from hongkong??

well please dont start the discussion once again..the 2900xt vs 8800gts/gx battle
ok ill put it in short
IF YOU think the future Catalyst releases will put the 2900XT ahead then you can take the risk. Noone here or anywhere can guarantee that.
At the moment i would take the 8800GTS over the 2900XT, bvecause the current benchies put it ahead or at least make it a much better VFM since its cheaper than the 2900XT, and has much more stable drivers.Other than that, it requires a comparitively lower PSU, and gives out much less heat, but that wont be much of a concern.
Its all up to you. You wanna gamble, you can go ahead and maybe youll hit the jackpot in the coming months.

for psu buy it locally, corsair hx620 which is selling for somewhere around 7.5k as someone mentioned in some other thread, and phoenix answer is spot on, as of now 8800GTS is better but 2900xt when launched was shitty product after a few driver updates it has started to perform better and some believe with more updates this can easily beat 8800GTS(it still beats it in some benchmarks) and come close to GTX but believing those guys would be a gamble.

thanks for the replies, but few questions more...

i read in many places that below 1600x1400 resolution there is no need for the 640mb vram,i wont play above 1280x1024 so can the 320mb version play @ 1280*1024 with max settings & aa/af??
is the aa/af dependent on amt of vram??

^^ thats good . the difference between 320mb and 640mb version crops up above 1600x1400 res. 320mb is fine but they say it will get limited for future game that might demand huge memory for big textures .. no, I think AA and AF depends on the memory bus speed(320-bit in 8800s) ....not sure

okk.. so the 640mb one should run most games @ 1280*1024 with max settings & max aa/af at playable frame rates?? anything above 40 is considered playable, is it so?? will getting 50 instead of 100 fps make any difference??

infact any thing above 30fps is playable, and getting 50 instead of 100fps doesnt make any difference to the gamer, but when checking the reviews look for the min. fps since the game might average 40 fps but in certain areas of a game there might be huge cluster of enemies and explosion where the card might get too slow and start to stutter the frames for a few seconds to a few minutes till the enemies are cleared or if you die.... :)
