Hi all,

Just got the quote for E6600 @ 12 K. Planning to buy it..but have following queries...

1. Does it makes sense upgrading from Presscott 3Ghz to E6600 (I know a presscott is no match for E6600 head on..) because I will not be upgrading my gfx card (currently 7600GT) atleast for next 3-4 months. So do u guys think that performance in games will improve if i upgrade? I mean can a 3Ghz presscott bottleneck a 7600GT?

2. Or should I wait for quadcores.. in August / September??

Current Config..

ASUS P5B Vanilla

Transcend JetRam 667Mhz 2*1GB

Palit 7600GT

Samsung HDD 80GB

Powersafe 450W PSU

PLease suggest guys... I'm confused... :(

Also does ASUS P5B support 1333 Mhz FSB CPUs??

Hey, e6600 is leaps ahead of Presshot 3Ghz in terms of performance and runs cooler. AFAIk it'll make some difference in games. e6600 should cost not more than 11500.

The price varies depending on location ;)

In mumbai its 12k or there about only.

And E6600 is generation ahead of prescott. You have noticeable difference in your gameplay experience. Basically you are going from CPU that sucked even 2 years back to the current performance king architecture.

with the preshott that u do have, i'd advice that u hang in there for a few months, then go the quad core way

price cuts are july 22 rite, so would suggest u wait till mid sep (for AMD and Intel to maybe actually compete)

then get the gfx card and the cpu both to see an enormous performance

if ur board can OC upto 333Mhz then yes, it does support 1333Mhz FSB proccy's

thanks for the reply guys...

Well just checked the ASUS site...and the damn P5B supports almost all the C2Ds even the quad cores with 1333 Mhz FSB.. (Correct me if I'm wrong) now I'm more confused...

Tempted by the E6600... but may be wait for the quad cores..

Just to avoid opening another thread...

Can u guys suggest a decent C2D config for my uncle (will never be oced) and budget is arnd 15K for Board processor Ram (the cheaper the better)

Was plannig for this config...

C2D E4300 or E6300

Mobo ?? Intel 945 or 965 ??

Transcend 667Mhz 2 x 1GB

Good PSU (Lower end but reliable) ??

TIA

Current quad core is not required for normal user and most importantly not advised for regular user.

Tell me why you need 4 cores.

Unless you have rendering farm or you are building pc for encoding or crunching you dont need Quad. And the current intel Kentsfield get very hot. So unless you plan some serious cooling for them its not a good purchase.

For your uncle drop the 6300. save yourself money and get e4300. MSI P965 Neo-F, Any cheapo GPU like 7100GS or 7300GS, 2 gigs of dynet or transcend and powersafe 400Watt will do for that system.

Suggesting MSI neo-f as it gives you flexibility of future upgrade and you dont need ocing board for ur uncle.

if you want a C2D setup that to in 15 k, this is what i can suggest you

get the e4300 - 5.3k

intel D965RYCK - 5.8 ( am suggesting you this thinking he will be needing on board graphics, else get the msi neo2)

power safe 400w - 1.5k

get in 1gb of ram - 1.6 k

I second funky's opinion, that quad arent required for anything at the moment except for redering or encoding.

I would say the E6600 is a good buy, but if you can wait then i would say that u should wait for 2-3 months till july august, cos that when the prices will drop quite a bit

@Funky and @Hotstuff.. well guys, my problem is not of need but of nice to have with future headroom. Now we are getting the E6600 at 12K...but may be 4 months down the line, we may get quad cores at same price (or am I expecting too much ? ) Problem is that... the E6600 will become todays E6300 once Intel launches the quad cores in July - August.. and going by their current strategy.. they may hit Indian shores almost simultaneously..

Regarding the other config...may be going for the same as u guys suggested.. thanks.

Well that way there is always going to be something better after 4 month. Always.

You will keep waiting forever this way.

And even after 4 months Quad Kentsfield is big no no for normal user.

When intel releases native 45nm Quad core then it might be worth having look. or when Amd finally releases Barcelona K10.

But current quad cores are simply too hot and totally unnecessary for average joe or even enthusiast gamer.

Hi Funky,

Does the KentsField get too HOT .... I mean i am planning on getting a Q6600 after July 22nd slashes. The work that i do is

1. Gaming

2. 3ds Max Rendering

3. Enormous amount of photoshopping (Even started HDR Photography)

4. Lots of Other 3d Software Packages (Maya, Z-Brush) Trying to Learn them.

The thing is, I know that i will really gain a lot in rendering due to Quad Core. I have seen the Benchies. But My question is, i never saw anywhere till now that they were too hot. I mean will i need a seperate cooling solution for the Q6600, as i wont be overclocking. I will get the Cabinet Stacker 830, and probably the Corsair PSU.

Please let me know, will I need a custom cooling solution for Q6600, or will the stock one work just fine.

Thanks

They do get very hot even at stock speeds.

In our weather where its normal for ambient to even reach as high as 35-40°C ( i know how hot pune can get ;) ) even at stock it can be really challenging to keep these kents cool with all 4 cores loaded. On stock cooler the temperatures are known to hit even 80 in no time.

With coolers like Ultra 120 extreme people still struggle to keep them below 60C. Thats how hot they can get. So unless you plan to upgrade to say U120 even if you are going to run it at stock. dont even think about kentsfield.

For your work, going quad will make sense. But for other people its not much of an use.

thanks a lot Funky ... my only doubt is ..... will it burn out and become unusable :) ...... lets hope that that doesnt happen .....

Thanks

Lol? Why should that happen?

The Kentsfield can take temp.'s upto 85C Load, without Throttling.

People just want to keep it below 60C, as Core 2 Duos are supposed to be kept at 60C and below, and kentsfield are in essence just 2 C2D's.

^^ Thanks a lot Aditya... What i wanted to know was that ... is there any particular reason as to why ppl want to keep it below 60C.

And is there any harm if it reaches 80C ......

And yes ... i know kentsfield is just 2 C2D's, but if that makes the temp go to 80C, is it actually that bad. This is just want i want to know. Though i am not upgrading now. It will be in Aug/Sept ... and i have no idea how good AMD solution will be, but i am asking this just as a doubt.

Is it bad? Yes it is. Problem with kentsfield is that it has 2 big cores on 1 chip sitting next to each other with equal effective heat dissipation area as chip IHS is same size.

That increases the core temps with 2 hot cores running side by side.

In long run you want to keep the chip temp as low as you can. Even for kents i would not suggest operating a system that goes above 65-67C full load for 24x7 operation.

Hmmm .... Thanks for telling me this ..... I might have to reconsider my decision...... anyways ... I will keep in touch and ask again in august/ sept ...... thanks a lot .... i just love this site
