Guide Really Really low power consumption(1 Watt!) Download Rig

OK people, this is my first ever tutorial here and most of u top horn doggies must be knowing it already :hap2: but I think its great for n00bies like me. :ohyeah:

So lets start now. What I plan to tell u all here is how to use a Mobile phone as a Download rig. First of all u'll ask why use a phone when u can get proper download rigs and seedboxes, well here are my points in favor of it:

  1. Very Low power consumption, almost null ;)
  2. No heating issue
  3. Highly portable
  4. Coolness Factor :D
  5. Maximized Resource Utilization

Lets start with the ingredients ;

  1. A Broadband Connection
  2. WiFi gateway or Switch
  3. WiFi enabled phone

As for the connection, I have BSNL's HOME 1350UL which provides steady 57-59KBps Download speed and upto 62KBps Upload speed.

For WiFi gateway I used my recently acquired UTStarcom WA3002G4 wireless gateway provided by BSNL.

For WiFi enabled phone, I used my year old trusty E51. Its the cheapest WiFi enabled phone out there. I still advise anybody wanting to try this to first get a Symbian60 OS based device like N95 etc.

Now first in order to be able to access the Internet on your WiFi phone first u'll need to change your modem's access method from Bridging to PPPoE inside the modem's firmware. A detailed how-to has already been posted by deathvirus_me, check it out here. :hap2:

Now on to the phone.

  1. Detect the WiFi network
  2. Define it by providing key etc.
  3. Now goto phone's Settings Menu.
  4. Settings>Connection>AccessPoints
  5. Scroll down to the WiFi access point and select it
  6. Goto Options>Advanced Settings
  7. First comes the IPv4 settings, same drill as configuring LAN

No need to tinker with IPv6 settings or the Proxy settings.

Now try to surf the web, it should work. After this either through phone itself or through PC, goto Sym Torrent's site. From Downloads select the SIS package and install it. If doing the process in the phone itself then no problem but from PC, u will have to use PC suite for installation. Now as this is a relatively old software so you'll have to manually change the phone's date to a year 2008 date to prevent Certificate Expiration conflicts.

After this the package is installed and you are ready to run it.

Now either from phone or a PC place a torrent file in a folder. Open SymTorrent, add that file from the folder and select the destination. Destination will be of course the memory card unless u have a phone with huge onboard memory like N95 8GB version. Now in the download will start showing the number of seeders and download speed. Just to check, I download some Shakira wallpapers and my download speed was 35-40KBps. :hap2: The completed downloads then can be accessed in memory card under a Bit Torrent folder.

SymTorrent works on port number 6881. I had no problem whatsoever whilst receiving Incoming connections but if some of you still want to or are having trouble with it, then can try port forwarding it from inside the modem's firmware.

Adios Amigos

Well Sym Torrent is for Symbian60 phones and the home page does mention it being compatible with S60 v5th phones too thus claiming it to be compatible with Nokia 5800. i don't have the phone so can't tell exactly but it should work.
For those with Java phones or S40 phones, check its sister app, MobTorrent.
For iPhone there is a dedicated client named uTorrentiPhone. Fro those with Windows Mobile phones there is WinMobile Torrent.
 Since I'm learning J2ME, I myself will try to make one cross-platform Java based torrent client for the the phones. :cool2:

Wont this drain the battery soon? You'll have to keep powering your cellphone all the time which exactly's not good.

Not exactly a d/l rig but serves instant d/ls. A d/l rig is something which's powered 24x7. :P

2 problems I see with this approach:

1. Memory card is flash memory after all, so will probably have its life shortened drastically by such downloads. Same with an N-series. If its a HDD, it will cost a bomb to replace on it (1.8")

2. As pointed above, battery wear n tear will be quite high as well.

This is not really feasible with the kind of ambient temp's we have here.

Battery drain is very high (~3Hours for N81) and recharging battery along with Wlan downloads makes the phone PCB very hot.

Downloading only makes the fone a lil warm, but thats okay. The Issue is when you'll keep the fone on charge while downloading.

Not recommended. Better be safe than sorry.

Dont waste ur 15-20k phone over this.

Hmmm.. I wonder if it will work on a gprs connection. Will give it a shot.

I got crappy speeds even on edge, so I'm guessing gprs will be very slow

I guess the best thing which would work with this kind of power is the WD World Edition drive. For about 6K you get 500 GB of storage with really low power consumption :)

Well it is only for a really low power setup if you want. As I said I used my E51 and it got warm not hot and temps wud lower even more if I switched ON the A.C in my room. :ohyeah: As for memory, flash cards are so cheap these days, almost use-n-throw. I got 2GB SD card for 200 bucks only. Way i see it, I can use a 4GB card, download movies on it and then use it as movie card with my Creative ZEN. For battery concerns I say keep the charger wire plugged in but it ain't gonna kill the battery soon. Dunno about other phones, my E51 works on 802.11 g so if we have phones and routers working on 802.11 n then consumption wud be even lower.
Please remember that, it was merely a guide to some stupid stuff I did, call it my Anarchist's Cookbook ;) :ohyeah: I'm not saying that throw away ur download rigs and start using this. Its just for some stupid tech fun.

nope mate its jst a web interface for controlling utorrent client on ur pc.

Download Transmisson is an dedicated bit torrent client for iphone but its in command-line only.

im yet to understand how u concluded 1Watt power consumption.

the idea seems good bt as sum1 already pointed out..the device life gonna degrade rapidly wid continuous n simultaneous charge n discharge.

Well from Nokia's spec sheet, mentioned its link too, the power consumption of the device is 1Watt and I never said that it is THE replacement for hunky download rigs, as for product's life, well as someone pointed out earlier that its good for on-the-go small downloads if u r in a high-speed network environment and I mentioned my use for the same. Elucidation is always welcomed. :cool2:

Good point,The battery life is an issue. Then the flash, these flash are usually the lowest binned flash,so it wont last long with quite a lot of abuse like bittorrent.

If someone could build a arm9 board with some storage/network controller (like in WD mybook),it can fetch the same or better results.
