Now this is happening quite a few times and not rarely that very old like an year old thread opened by a newbie user. I think a restriction can be implemented to restrict any user for posting in very old thread like 3-6 months old. And post in same thread can be done thru moderator permission.

I dont see any harm if they open old threads :S

I feel if a newbie has opened an old thread, hes put in that effort of searching a similar issue instead of creating a new thread.

Eg. How do i overclock? :S

nope...

it shud be as it is..

mods wud fall short to attend to all newbies askin to open up the locked threads so that they can carry on with their queries there.

instead it is better as it is now.

+1

Leave it as it is. If a newbie takes the trouble to dig up an old thread and post his similar query there, its a good thing :) Helps keep continuity as well. How many times do we anyway tell them to search old threads ;)

spending way too much time on t bhp are we? One of the features i like less about that place. If a newbie bumps up an old thread, it is immediately closed. On the other hand , if you post a new thread, it is immediately merged with the existing one and a warning given.

does not leave you with many options, does it ?

^^^lol at the above situation! Yes, better leave things as they are rather than the above scenario!

But the question is how old is old, there are threads like the one for the 3DMark 06 benchmark which people bump use whenever there's a result to post. Another example is the Naruto and Bleach thread in the general section, every Friday people post the link to the latest episode and have 5~6 posts related to the same and it goes down to the second or third page in between before its bumped up again the next week. Would you rather that there are separate threads each week/month/year rather than a single one. Other than that, there are the iPhone, PSP threads in which are used by people for their iPhone, PSP queries instead of creating a new one every time.

I would say closing old threads would be more trouble when compared to the odd newbie who bumps a old thread without a valid reason.

Its actually better if someone posts in an old thread where they're having a similar issue, rather than them create a new thread and everyone having to point them to the old threads for reference. As |Anish| said, it means he's atleast taken the effort to search beforehand.

However what we do not endorse is someone bumping up an old thread saying "wow nice post" or something silly like that. In those cases, report the post and we'll do the needful ASAP. This happens quite rarely, so its not really worth auto-locking old threads.

I really don't see any problem with that . Rather than creating new thread every week it is better we stick to a single thread. Only few of us are posting there.
