Introduction :
Well I'm home for a few days. Today afternoon my cousin came and he wanted a good easy to use phone for his new wife. We went to a nearby dealer and we started looking at different phones. Needless to say he was in full dilemma over which phone to choose and he was more tilted towards N70 as his budget was around 12k to 18k. We even looked at the Nokia E60 but my cousin wanted to avoid the symbian third edition plus it was pretty much costly. For home use it wasn't much justified as he had a N80 already so we started looking for other options.

Me being a big big fan of the Nokia Series 40 repeatedly insisted him on getting the Nokia 6233, I told him about the Nokia 6101 too. He was a bit skeptical about the 6 mb onboard memory and he thought it might make the phone slow but i told him that nokia series 40 is designed in such a way that they don't normally use the onboard memory as it is not like a process based OS like symbian, though some onboard memory is required specially if your using to load large themes. Also having Bluetooth 2.0 the problem of file transfers larger than the onboard memory to the phone was solved so this is a plus point.So finally after some quick thoughts I bought this phone with much anticipation started opening it straight out.

Lets have a look ahead what makes this phone the nokias best selling series, afterall Nokia's 6233 is a phone which is the successor of the highly successful Nokia's 6230i which is herself a successor of the highly successful Nokia's 6230
.

[BREAK=First Look At The Phone]
First Look at Nokia 6233 :

The packaging of the phone wasn't attractive at all and it felt real cheap. Upon opening the package first thing that I noticed is the the slim looking phone on the top and underneath were some of the components listed as follows.

  1. [*]The phone included in a recyclable poly-ethane packet.
    [*]A 64 MB Micro-SD card along with a adapter to use it with card readers.
    [*]A Standard battery, Li-Po 1100 mAh (BP-6M)
    [*]A installation CD.
    [*]A manual book.

My only concern here was the phone at first look didn't looked that great. The color was not at all attractive they could have done it like Nokia 6230i at least. A silvery steel finish would have been much more welcomed as opposed to metallic finish on a plastic body. But the keypad felt very good on first look also undoubtedly it has a very good tactile feedback and better ergonomics. Though I personally felt the Nokia 6230i's keypad is better so far I've used. One more thing is that the the rounded edges makes this phone a little inferior to phones having candy bar design with sharp edges

Here are some pictures I have taken with another camera phone.The pictures are not that great quality but it is understandable.I'll upload some good pics later when i get hold of a digicam.

Phonebook : The phonebook has a max capacity of 500 and it implements the T9. It has lots of fields for each contacts and it can be syncronised with a server with the help of the inbuilt SYNC-ML client which is very very useful incase the phone gets lost or something.Now a days many websites provide free syncing of contacts which includes a very pupolar ZYB Sync www.zyb.com.

Music : Inbuilt Music player with support for mp3/aac/m4a formats. These can also be used as ring tones. It has also a dual speaker setup with 3D effects. The headphone provided is HS23 which does quite a decent work when compared to the Sony's.An inbuilt radio makes things best from better.

Media player : The phone has a inbuilt media player as well with support for direct streaming and support for mp4 and 3gpp formats.The video player now is equipped with forward and rewind system with a typical interval of 10 . 20, and 30 secs.

Data Transfer : This is a series 40 3rd Edition 3G enabled phone with support for EDGE class 10 [236.8 kbps), along with GPRS class 10 (48 kbps max) and HSCSD (43.2 kbps). So you wont have to worry much on this front it packs almost everything it can.

Connectivity : This phone boasts of having Bluetooth 2.0 along with normal Infrared Port and Data cable connectivity (CA 53 AND DKU 2 supported) with the option of being used as a mass storage device when needed. So we can see its pretty much packed in this front too.

Expandable Memory : It also packs a 64 MB micro SD card which has some real good data transfer rates and is pretty much faster when compared directly to the MMC, rs-MMC or even MMC plus.

Camera : This phone has a 2 mega pixel camera without flash. It boasts of having a maximum of 1600 by 1200 resolution and it also have a very unique feature - and that is to record videos in VGA quality 640 * 480 resolution.Camera pictures are posted in a different page along with a video.

Extras : This supports Java MIDP 2.0 along with CLDC 1.1 along with power to play Flash animations [.swf] . This also has a lot of useful latest JSR implementations which will allow developers to develop exclusive software's for the 3rd edition. For details on this look Nokia developers Forum.File system access has been much better implemented in the 3rd edition of series 40 so now for this 3rd edition we can except quite a lots of softwares to roll out as opposed to the series 40 second edition.

Battery : It is supplied with 1100 mAh battery which has a advertised 4 hour talk time and roughly 300 hours standby time. The battery is small and fat.
Disadvantages :

1. Only 500 contacts field as compared to 1000 in its predecessor Nokia 6230i.This might hinder heavy duty business users. Though very few uses contacts over 500.

2. Somewhat Limited 6 MB internal Memory, though it doesnt effects the phone much but having some big internal memory has good psycological effects.

3. The display being brilliant appears a little little "can be relative" dull due to ODD color of the phone body.

4. The camera cannot take Macro photos, also No flash.

5. Only 64 MB micro SD card provided, you have to buy a bigger one to use a potential mp3 player.

6. No bundled data cable provided, smartass nokia assumed we have one from buying its previous phones.

Some pictures of the brilliant display and menu system.
(These will be followed with more pics of music player media player etc etc tomorrow)

The Brilliant Display shown above.

The display showing flash animation.

The menu system of series 40 3rd edition- now thats I call clean and tidy baby.

The Port - indeed a revolutionary developement as it takes anything in! that is made by Nokia.

[BREAK=2MP Camera Unveiled]
The Camera and its limitations :

Personally I didnt liked the camera too much but afterall for 13k you shouldnt expect much. However still it adds a lot of punch and decent enough for more than average cam activists as used on phone.
Pros of the Camera :

  1. Max resolution supported 100 by 1200
  2. The camera is'nt exposed like 6230iinstead covered by a protective glass
  3. Whites can be balanced
  4. Seamless Zoom provided.
  5. The video camera can record at VGA quality means 640by 480 resolution
Cons of the Camera :

  1. No Flash - Big drawback however Nokia is'nt known for putting all eggs in one basket afterall.
  2. Cam Quality is somehow poor compared to K750i.
  3. No Macro Mode or Autofocus.
Pictures taken by the camera during various light conditions:
(note: The plastic cover on the camera wasnt removed so the pictures in actual will be slightly better than it appears here, due to the plastic protective cover on the camera glass.)

[BREAK=Connectivity & Sound Quality Dissected]
Indetails of the connectivity power of this cellphone:

Well well well , guys dont you think its the connectivity what makes the 62xx series phones the best in class? They never hangs , they never slows down its just seamless work work and work guided by a fast and attractiveOS.

The speed of the interface can be rated as follows
6230>6230i=6233

The phones bluetooth supports stereo audio gateway.Immediately after installing the PC suite I started using the audio gateway.The audio quality wasnt too good but it was respectable.Also I tested this phone with as much rough handling as possible. Bluetooth transfer rate is typically around 72 kbps when your not using the bluetooth for anything else. I even used the bluetooth to connect the internet, used the same bluetooth to transfer a file again used the memory card as a mass storage device and transferred data simultaneously. Needless to say it worked like a charm - wild horse!.

So you can see this phone wins hands down on the connectivity part. Coupled with high resolution display fast interface very good music player, attractive themes and a good video camera this phone is the best one available at the price tag of 13k in India right now.

Sound Quality:

The Phones inbuild mp3 player has a very nice interface along with a 5 band equillezer.The equillezer adds real punch and there's significant difference between normal volume and equillised volume.It also offers to change the equillizer on the fly i.e. you dont have to go to menu to change it just the 4 way joystick does it.

You can store as much as songs as you want with officially supported memory card upto 1 GB, this is a very good potential mp3 player replacement.The provided HS23 headset performs on par with the sonys walkman series but you might find it odd on busy traffic roads as this dont have the noise cancellation feature.The sound is deep , bass is promising and overall its 9 stars out of 10 considering the price of this phone.The pair of stereo speakers does the jobs decent, though 3D stereo is just not too much experiencable on speakers, but the speakers overall raw sound just doubles up compared to the phones having single speaker.

The phone boasts a hefty 1 hour of voice recording along with a media player than can play some good formats like 3gpp . mp4.It supports the rstp protocol as well allowing you to view streamed videos.It has a forward/rewind interval of 10,20 and 30 seconds respectively.

It also adds a FM radio on the move which is very decent and a must have thing on a all rounder gadget like this.

Pics of interfaces of music player coming soon!
[BREAK=Conclusion]
Conclusion:

The Phone is a very very good phone.At its price range its just unbeatable.I liked everything except a flash addition and a wifi would have been made it one of the best in class.camera's still pic quality is very good but not best.I'll post a lot of pics tomorrow so till now its this much only.
Its sleek handy small yet a powerful toy for business minded peoples who are on a hurry this phone is highly recommendable.

Though the one I recieved had a firmwire 3.70 and it hanged only once while working with multiple instances on bluetooth but a simple googling revealed that 3.70 is full of bugs, so i'll get it updated to 4.25 as soon as possible.
Thanks to my cousin for getting the phone of my choice and he likes it now even better than his N80! hehe.

Overall a great highly recommendable phone.Mods if there are any mistakes kindly correct it, also guys If the review needs any changes or you need informations do let me know about this phone.I'd be glad to provide you help. and oh by the way MORE PICS COMING for a indetailed way so that viewers can have a much better picture of the inside of the phone.till then hang on your shoes.
