RJ-11 connector, phone wires, etc ...

As mentioned in an earlier post, I've just got a MTNL ADSL connection. Some doubts :

1) Is it possible to connect a RJ-11 connector to a phone wire without the crimping tool ? My PC is far away from the phone. I wanted a line ( from the modem/router to the splitter ) with minimum breaks/connections so I bought a pair of RJ-11s and took them along with the wire to the MTNL exchange. Luckily for me the guys at the Gandhi Market exchange were very cooperative and connected them. Can it be done without the crimping tool ?

2) Will this result in a better/faster connection ?

3) Does the quality of the wire matter ? The guy from whom I bought the RJ-11s said it did and that the "PVC" MTNL wire wasn't too good. Good wire would cost approx Rs 3 - 4 per meter.

Thanks.
