Router + Access Point??

Hey,

I have the BSLN provided UTSTARCOM WA3002G4 wireless modem with a 512kbps unlimited connection. Which is located in our pc room on the ground floor.

I will be getting a laptop soon, which will be in my room, on the first floor ( I will be using it also on the 2nd floor in our library)

Also I'd like to use the Wifi for browsing on my N95 8GB.

I wanted to know how to boost the WiFi signal using an access point(I have no idea what it is, but people I spoke to said I need to get one of those)

I would like to know :

1: What is an access point, the brands that sell it, model number of the good ones?

2: Will I need to attach my modem and the access point by cable?
Will I need to extend the phone line cable? Or just use a LAN cable?

3: Are all brands/models compatible with the BSNL's modem?

4: Can I get a better modem instead of the BSNL's modem and use the existing UTSTARCOM WA3002G4 as an access point?

5: Should I use a range extender?

6: Can I get a big antenna and will it boost the signal?

7: Access point? Repeater? Range Extender? What are all those things?

If it's a wireless modem+router, then you won't need a separate access point, since your modem already has wireless capability.

It is a wifi modem, bsnl call it a Type II modem. But I have heard people say that the modem has to be compatible with the access point. Im confused as to which access point/range extender to get.

Sorry. Didn't read your post properly earlier. What I'd suggest instead is to bridge your BSNL modem, get a Linksys WRT54G2/GL, flash it with Tomato firmware and run that. Should give you better range than the stock firmware. And more features too.

So what you guys are saying is that I can get a normal wifi router and connect it to my existing wifi modem with the RJ45 Cable(is that what its called?)?
That sounds pretty easy

And the aforementioned Linksys WRT54G2 is just around Rs 2000 :hap2:
