For what it's worth, it might not be a good investment to move to these drives. Then again, boot times are already incredibly fast as it is if you are coming from another SSD. So there's that. What are you looking to use the system for that you seriously want to get that type of read speed anyways? I take it that it would be intensive video editing? Regular photo editing and basic computer tasks and games should still suit wall on your current set up.

Won't that be one heck of a looooong wait? And then pricing would be a bomb once Optane technology comes to the consumer oriented market?

yep, most of the tech sites talk about just 2016 (no quarter mentioned) release and that too nothing about whether it will be enterprise and/or consumer. wherever you might have read Q1 might be an assumption/incorrect statement by one of those sites.

IDF update: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10568/intel-optane-and-3d-xpoint-updates-from-idf

By offering cloud-based access before even sampling Optane SSDs, Intel can keep 3D XPoint out of the hands of their competitors longer and perhaps make better use of limited supply while still enabling the software ecosystem to begin preparing for the revolution Intel is planning.

And maybe cheat a little bit by putting the SSDs in massively RAID-ed (striped) configs to make them look good? :D
