Samsung P6800 Galaxy Tab 7.7

The Samsung P6800 Galaxy Tab 7.7 packs a 7.7" SuperAMOLED Plus screen with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution, which gives it the highest pixel density we've seen on a tablet yet (196ppi). For comparison, the iPad has 132ppi, the XOOM has 149ppi and the original Galaxy Tab has 169ppi.

The Tab 7.7 is powered by an overclocked version of the Exynos chipset found in the Galaxy S II - a 1.4GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM and Mali-400MP GPU. This chipset has been blazing through our benchmarks - we can't wait to see how it performs against its bigger Tab 10.1 and Tab 8.9 siblings.

We're working on a hands-on for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 but for now here are some more mouth-watering specs - it's only 7.8mm thick making it the thinnest tablet yet and has very little bezel around the screen (since the capacitive keys have been removed).

The list goes on: a 3MP autofocus camera with LED flash and 720p video recording, a 2MP fixed-focus front camera, 16GB storage and an IrDa port (yes, you read that right). You also get telephony and 3G HSPA+ connectivity.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 runs Android 3.2 Honeycomb with the tablet version of the TouchWiz UI. It will come in a variety of versions when it comes to internal storage - 16/32/64GB and you have a microSD card slot too.

Stand by for our hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 for more details.

Samsung Galaxy Note

The Samsung Galaxy Note also debuts at IFA but it can't make up its mind - is it a tablet or a phone? Both - it has a 5.3" screen but also full telephony features. And we've seen people use a 5" Dell Streak as a phone, so it's really up to you if you use the Note as a phone or as a tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Note

The Galaxy Note has a 5.3" WXGA (1280x800) screen (285ppi) and comes with a stylus, the S Pen that works with dedicated apps (S Planner, S Memo, etc.). It runs Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread (and not Honeycomb as you might have expected) on the same beefed up Exynos chipset as the Tab 7.7 (dual-core 1.4GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, Mali-400MP GPU). However, its camera is much better at 8MP with 1080p video recording.

The Galaxy Note measures 9.65mm of thickness and 178 grams of weight. It's battery is 2,500mAh.

5.3" WXGA SAMOLED screen! Yikes. Now that is one humongous phone (Or should I say a mini tablet:P)

Both sports a Exynos 1.4GHz and Mali 400. The Galaxy 7.7 is super thin with uber cool looks :cool2:

Why don't samsung and other brands realize that while reducing the bezel makes the tablet look sleeker it also makes it a hassle to use, resulting in unwanted screen interactions. A tablet is not phone sized that you can wrap your fingers around the back and prod on the screen. Anyways the 7.7 looks pretty promising, hope they price it like galaxy tab.

The 7.7incher has enough bezel to hold it comfortably by both hands.

The note does not need thick bezel, its slightly bigger than regular phones, can be held comfortably by one hand or with around the device grip (compact camera grip). Looks more like a superphone from Samsung that was rumoured for a while than a tablet. The resolution is mouth watering.

Samsung Really need to produce a new display... Super AMOLED and Super AMOLED+ displays wouldn't take them any further... They need to produce a display like Retina Display by using which they can squeeze in higer pixels per inch... Samsung is really changing the defination of cellphones by releasing such huge handsets... Handsets are meant to be portable not tablet like size wise... they need to understand this... That was the only reason why Apple invented Retina display coz they wanted to produce a handset which should be portable (iPhone 4) and should have a higher resolution screen which should make browsing sites and watching videos a breeze...

Errr... The device has a 285ppi screen. Anything above ~300ppi is considered retina display. So this is just 5%-8% off that mark. 5.3" WXGA screen is awesome. Not everyone would be satisfied with a tiny screen :P Many went for the Streak only because of the screen despite better h/w available at similar price points. If you dislike ~5" ones there are alway 4.3",4" devices with good specs from them too.

By todays standards 3.5 inch screen on iphone 4 is very small for a high end device. I dont see any purpose of Retina display on such a small screen. I will anyday take 4.3 inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus screen than retina display on iphone4 and this 5.3 Super AMOLED HD display is really AWESOME.

Samsung is really producing top of the line products, catering to all the segments of the markets and its going to be very tough for Apple to match it.

Many people dont like Huge cellphones... Many people have sold their S2 because they didn't find S2 portable... I know that some crazy people are there in this world who would also go as far to buy 7 inch screen handset if Samsung would release one... Instead of making small cellphones with higher resolution screen they are manufacturing huge cellphones with higher resolution screen... I think that day isn't far when we would buy Cordless telephone sized cellphones...

Bigger screens are the need of the day in US. Two major carriers have launched 4.5" S2 instead of 4.27". Guess there would be some market analysis into it and they opted for larger screen since they had demand for the same. Might not suite the avg. sized Indian's paw but might suit someone from UK, USA. Again as i mentioned earlier this 5.3" slate has a ppi closer to the retina cutoff. So ppi isnt an issue.

Guess this would be the first of many with the WXGA screen. Hoping for more 4"-4.5" WXGA resolution phones. (Have used DHD. I might need a bit more real estate :P 4.5" would be ideal i guess)

Of course the Galaxy 7.7" too supports "Tablet with support for GSM voice communication" :P

Which means that if Apple happens to bump up the next gen iPhone's screen size to 4" and keeps the resolution same as that of iPhone 4, it will no longer be a retina display.

@DA

See if they would release 4" to 4.3" 1280x800 Resolution cellphones then people would love to buy them but 5.3" is just huge... Some people wouldn't be even able to touch an icon on the top left corner by using their thumb because of the huge screen size... And some people wouldn't like to have a huge cellphone in the pocket of their jeans or trouser coz it would become very hard for them to remove it from their pocket... Maybe this is my perception...

The huge screen is the only reason I've put off buying the SGS2. I've got decent sized hands and log fingers too but the big screen of the SGS2 isn't comfortable at all for maneuverability with just 1 hand. It might be great for browsing if you're indoors but if you're commuting by trains or buses on these pothole ridden roads where you're holding on to handles for dear-life, the small screen size proves very convenient.

As I said in the other thread this culture of high res displays in small size is very let's say concerned development as far as eye fatigue and accompanying symptoms are concerned. And retina display is just a marketing moniker. 2 point discrimination by human retina is not as small as retina display suggests. It's quite larger actually. The problem is that larger resolution promotes squinting even though the text on display may be crystal clear. Thats why I have always advised my friends to get a tablet for any serious browsing. And apple keeps size of the display low to offer decent battery life and not to increase ppi.
