PC Peripherals Seagate 1TB 7200.12 Clicking noise!!!

v.Na5h

Forerunner
As the title suggests my drive produces a clicking noise during on/off

Whenever i turn on the pc the hard disk spins up(can hear a whizzzing noise about 2-3 secs) and then there a buzzing noise followed by a short clicking noise....

Similarly during shutdown there a short clicking noise again...

This used to happen from the day a bought the hard disk about 4-5 months ago

I never bothered about it as it used to happen only during on/off

so thought it was normal spin-up noise

Lots of people have this HDD in TE

so need feedback about this guys....

Is this normal???

It is not normal if you are getting clicking noise all the time this means the hard drive will fail shortly. If you are getting the same only during startup when it spins for the first time and during shutdown when it is powering down then it should not be much of a worry. But if you are getting the clicking noise all the time means the hdd will crash anytime and it is better to back up all your data and get a RMA done.

i need more input guys ....

esp having this particular model.....

Test it with seatools
it passes every test...

checked using seatools as well as speedfan.

The HDD parks it heads when shutting down

Maybe the sound is from that activity as it is only during startup & shutdown

use HDD Tune to check the Health of the drive.

Please post a screenshot of that here.

AS for clicking during startup is normal. My Maxtor 40GB IDE drive has been clicking every time from startup to shutdown from the day I purchased it.

i feel its just the initial starting sound and the parking sound during shutdown, which should not be a concern, still do acheck with hdd tune and on a safer side always have backup of your data.

What more Views do you want seriously?
No its not normal for Drives to make a Clicking Noise. You can check the Seagate Forums for further Details on the Clicking Issue.
As everyone has said that its quite an indication that your Drive will fail in the near future so you can take a backup of it and wait for it to fail. This will not be RMAed in the current scenario since there is no Hardware Failure in the Drive as of now.
This happens with people often, even with me it has happened. So just relax and deal with it.
Try to use the TE search function to get more details as its a very common problem and you arnt certainly the first person to face it.
