My cousin was trying out a new SMPS yesterday. It didn't work so he switched it back to the old one.But due to a short-circuit the power cable to his Seagate 320GB internal hard drive got burnt. On Inspection, a chip in the hard drive has got cracked. Can this hard drive be replaced under warranty?

nope. It cant get replaced but does it really looks physically damaged?? like any black/brown spot around the chip or anything? Does it also smells bad?

If not then you may try the replacement, you never know you might get lucky!

If seagate is still as good as they used to be then yes it is covered under warranty. You have to fill a form saying that the cause of the burned hard drive was due to SATA power connector.

Long time back same thing happened to me. :D drive was replaced under warranty.

@amarbir, data and HDD are important 'course.but more preference for the data.

@sandy,

I dont think they will do that if I say it was coz of a power connector or anything.I would rather lie that power fluctuations caused it instead of quoting the reason that the person was changing SMPS.Why would any company cover voluntary mess made by the customer?

then here's a solution go to a electronics ka shop , n tell him to remove the burnt IC, its called TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) Diode, its used to keep the PCB safe from over voltages, after removing it connect it to a PSU which u know is good, IT WILL WORK, copy the data n never see the HDD again, THIS THING WORKED FOR ME.

dude sounds sense here. Does that work for most hdd's if they got short due to similar scenario or reverse sata connection or any short circuit on he PCB itself?

You dont need to tell them anything. Just give it for RMA. Make sure you give it directly to segate and not to your local good for nothing dealer.

The samething happend to me. A bad 400W psu burned out some IC on a 320GB drive. Segate repalced the drive for me.

yea ...it should be replaced under warranty ....happened with me once before ...the power connecter melted and left a black spot on the HDD connector. Still they replaced it without any hassle. Got a brand new 400GB instead of the 360 GB i gave :P.

Its not covered under warranty but with some luck you can get it replaced. I have done that before. Once, I fried my HDD when I wrongly inserted the power cable without observing negative or positive which led to short circuit.

there was a terrible burning smell and buring marks. I used some alcohol to clean the burn marks and sprayed deodorant to counter the smell. this way ACCELL didn't suspect a thing, instead they said your HDD has very nice smell

Best of luck

No you won't get any warranty claim on it, its not covered under warranty but as you can see in above posts that some people still get warranty on physical damage, companies some time give some times not but 90% is NO, so tell your cousin to go Seagate Service center and see what they say, don't say them anything about short-circuit

In Kolkata when you give the HDD for RMA, the Accel people among other thing check the HDD with a multimeter attached to the power connector and they refused a HDD for RMA when it failed some test with the multimeter.

So, try your luck.

In Chennai (HO), they dont ask any questions - even they dont ask what the problem is
they just collect it and give u a RMA slip :bleh:

The same for accel in mumbai.they just do not have the time to inquire.the only thing they Ask you is your contact no. Just try your luck,if it does not succeed buy a new one and try after a few months. The service personnel wont be the same the next time around and he/she will accept it for sure.

Apparently, the IC is burnt and melted. So it's my cousin's luck I guess. Will update you guys how the Seagate service center at Bangalore reacts to this.
