I had bought a Seagate 7200.11 last year. It bricked on me. I lost valuable data with it. I got a 7200.12 as a replacement. Wisely I brought my friend's WD 1TB My Book to my place for backup. While backing up it could not copy two video files. All else was saved. The problem: bad sectors. I got it RMAed again. All was fine until yesterday.

I had three partitions on my 500GB 7200.12. I used GParted to delete one of them (25GB) and merged it with the other (228GB). It said there were some problems with the drive and the operation could not be completed. I did the same with my Hitachi 160GB (3.5 years old) and it was done no problems. I scanned my Seagate with SeaTools and guess what? Short DST fail, SMART fail, Long DST fail, short generic pass! Is this the same bad sector problem? :@

What action could I take? I am sick of getting my drive RMAed every 3 months. Is there something other than praying that I could do? I will never advice anyone to buy this Seagate garbage-worthy product. If you have experienced this problem, please advise.

Whats your PSU? other system specs? Could be a PSU causing consistent failures...

well of late seagate drives aren't a safe bet for some time now and I have read at many forums about their status......but just to be sure it would be right to check the motherboard's SATA Ports and PSU to zero in on HDD.........If thats the case try WD......Reliable and top performing as of now..........but first do check the two things mentioned as if these two are not OK then u mite brick ur WD as well.........

New Seagate 7200.12 are running absolutely fine ( touch wood ) for me for 1 year

God forbids this does not happen with me or anyone else

did you try to change the sata cable and perhaps a different sata port on the board?
SATA Cable changed already, no effect. Will try a different port and report tomorrow.

I doubt if my VX450W is causing the problems. The other HDD is fine. Currently using a 9600GT along with this config : | Phenom II X4 940 BE | TRU120E Rev C | 160GB Hitachi + 500GB Seagate 7200.12 | VX450W | GA-MA790GP-UD4H | CM Elite 334 |

My friend bought a Seagate 7200.12 500GB and guess what, his brand new HDD had bad sectors too. He is getting it RMA'ed soon. I recommended the whole rig to him and two components gave problem, Transcend RAM and Seagate HDD. :(
