CPU/Mobo Secondary system - NAS, DLNA, Download machine, 24x7

Hello Friends

Recently I upgraded to Skylake from Phenom II. Had the spares lying around. So for test, I put them together
- Phenom II X4 955 BE + Stock cooler
- GA-880-GM - USB3
- 4x4 Corsair Vengeance
- Antec 450W PSU
- 500GB + 1TB WD Green
- El Cheapo - Zebronics case ( No case fan yet)
- Ubuntu Mate

Network
- Ethernet connection to Router
- WoL active

This is being used for
- DLNA (with trans-coding)
- VPN + Torrents
- Samba server

-- Future use
-- WordPress server

Now this is not a power efficient system. It gets very hot with core reaching 60. The case choice was a mistake as it is a very tight fit. That's why it is not 24x7. Have set WOL. I turn it off every night.

Please suggest if I should keep this or sell CPU+MOBO (+RAM) and get a new itx combo. Budget plays a factor here as I have already spent a lot on my skylake build.

I would ideally suggest to sell it, but if you are doing transcoding, a minimum of i3 is needed ideally, assuming you keep BR Rips. VPN usage - again this requires AESNI for better performance. Samba being single threaded, needs a high clock speed.

If you sell the CPU/mobo/RAM, I dont think you will be able to buy even a G4400 which is the best entry level all rounder now. This will satisfy the VPN and Samba requirment, but transcoding? I am not so sure. What do you transcode btw, I mean source. If you keep transcoded rips with MP4 and a low enough baseline, then you would ideally not require transcoding.

Budget -12K

Intel Pentium G 4400 -4500,
Gigabyte GA-110M-S2 -4500,
Corsair Vengeance 8GB 2400Mhz DDR4 -3000.
Total -12,000.

Thx. 110M-S2 is MAtx. I will be looking for mini-itx only to make it as compact as possible.
  • I have a spare 8GB Gskill in my primary build. So RAM should not be needed now.
  • For this build I can procure mobo + cpu from US / Canada if there is some combo in 8-10K

+1 Vivek. Will sell it as we discussed. Set this up to test few things and identify my needs
For this build I'm not in a hurry. So if I can get a good combo on resale or from US as well. Media sources are mkv, mp4. No BR rips at the moment. But keeping transcoding in list for future.

How about a decent android box with hevc support ?
Android won't serve the purpose as I have other needs which require linux box. I know can't have one for all scenario but a linux build will be a best fit.
